Meet Nicole Silva of Crumbles Bakery in Locust Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Silva.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been a baker. I started at the side of my grandmother when I was a child. When I had my own kids, I began to get in to decorative treats because I love to throw elaborate parties. When my daughter Karsyn was turning three I began practicing the art of decorated cookies and cakes to prepare for her party. After the party everyone started asking me to make things for their kid’s parties. At that time GA did not have a cottage food law, so I couldn’t sell treats. A friend suggested that I use this new talent to raise money for charity, so I started Cookies for a Cure. Through Cookies for a Cure I was able to raise thousands of dollars for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. That was the start of my business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been pretty good but there have been some obstacles…lol. The first obstacle was that initially you couldn’t sell food goods from your home in GA, but GA got a cottage food law, and it’s been pretty smooth since then. Initially I baked for charity, then I had a cottage food bakery from my home, and now I have a brick and mortal bakery. When I first opened the bakery, I was still a full-time teacher – that was hard. And needless to say, I got NO SLEEP AT ALL.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Crumbles Bakery – what should we know?

The characteristic that is most important to my success is determination. I’m always trying to make a way out of no way. I got that from my mother.
