Today we’d like to introduce you to Nykiah Lee.
Hi Nykiah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my non-profit business called “My Mother’s Cake Organization” from inspiration of witnessing women goin through troubled times in the city of Atlanta by meeting a homeless lady on the streets, You could not tell that she was homeless because she kept herself groomed well, and not looking so down and out, but she had good upbeat energy as well. I learned about the homeless shelters for Mom’s and Kids, because that is where she was residing at and I asked her what do they provide mother’s/ women in time of need ? So, she gave me details of her experience there and that she feels safe there with her kids, also that they provide a great deal of services for women experiencing homelessness, and often times the shelter offer daily hygiene products, but are limited because of some residents like to abuse and take lots of the products so they wont have any to give out to the residents at times, the ladies would have to purchase their own form time to time. I had came up with the idea of helping the shelters provide more hygiene, beauty products for women who are in shelters or just homeless altogther, In this way the women can have what they need to continue to thrive in society being a woman.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey of creating a non-profit/ charity type of business structure has been a bit challenging when it come to finding sponsors, and just getting the word out about your program. I would say that would be the only challenge so far, but I know that it is also apart of the game in entreprenuership when it comes to fundraising, building business and so forth. I like a bit of a challenge because the acheivement that comes behind it feels very rewarding when things finally come together!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about “My Mother’s Cake Organizaton”?
