Meet Ok Ja Song of Aju Song Acupuncture.LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ok Ja Song.

Hi Ok Ja, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I, Dr. Ok Ja Song, am an RN, CCRN (Critical Care RN), Acupuncturist, and Herbalist in Oriental medicine.
While I was growing up in a small village in the countryside in South Korea, our village did not have a Western medicine facility for the sick people. So, when children had a high fever or a bellyache, one of the blind men who carried the long, thick acupuncture needle was called for the care. In most cases, problems were resolved. In what way, or how it worked, I had no idea, but it got me very interested in learning at an acupuncture school.

At first, I attended the “WonGu University of Oriental Medicine” in Las Vegas for 6 months in 2013. I moved back home to Atlanta, Georgia, and I attended two different Oriental Medicine Schools. While I was looking for another school for a doctorate in Oriental Medicine, I attended the business administration school to earn a BS degree.
After 8 years of schooling, I was finally accepted for a doctorate program at Virginia University of Integrative Medicine (VUIM) and graduated. During the Master’s program internship, I treated patients in 660 visits, and during the doctorate program, over 500 visits for the Internship periods. I earned the license for an acupuncturist and Herbalist. I graduated with a doctorate in March 2024. In Georgia, the only state that requires a one-year externship under the supervision of an experienced acupuncturist to open your own clinic. So I am finally operating my own clinic.

The difference between Oriental medicine and Western Medicine is that we treat the root of the ailment, whereas Western Medicine treats the symptoms. Of course, the priority is to treat the acute issues first, then gradually search for the origin of the problem. Ultimately, to promote the smooth flow of Qi (pronounced chi) and blood. The Qi pathway is blocked when a person feels pain, and over a longer period, the more Qi flow is blocked, the more it will interfere with blood flow.

My goal is to specialize in neurology and women’s problems. I am treating the majority of patients with pain, stress-related digestive problems, anxiety-related depression, grief-related lung energy issues, and liver and kidney-related fertility issues. I am treating patients with one-sided paralysis post-stroke, and all four extremities paralysis after a motor vehicle accident due to damage to the cervical spine. With acupuncture and herbs, patients can feel the sensation and move their arms and legs. In other words, sensory and motor functions are slowly returning to a certain degree. You could not imagine how good I felt, and the patient’s excited face when I saw that moment. Most of all, I love to dedicate and serve patients as a nurse, an acupuncturist, and a herbalist, which makes me a worthy person, and I feel a part of a real community to bring people’s optimal health.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a smooth road now.

Graduating from school at that time was very difficult because Atlanta did not have a recertified Oriental Medicine School while I was attending the school.
