Today we’d like to introduce you to Olatunde Richardson.
Hi Olatunde, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Tunde’s Tea Shop during the pandemic in 2021 after having a seizure that left in acoma. During the healing journey, I decided to start a business, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do. While recovering from being sick, I developed a bit of an obsession with tea, and the process of preparing different blends. The idea to start a tea business was inspired by my younger sister. It was her 21st birthday, and I didn’t have much money, so I decided to make her tea. At the time I was a big fan of Thai Iced Tea, so I made my own Vegan version, since I was born and raised in a plant-based household. I decided to prepare my own special blend of vegan Thai Tea for her as gift. At the moment, that was the only gift I could afford to give. She absolutely loved it, and her friends shared the same sentiment. That little gift of tea changed my life. Shortly after, I made my first batch to sell and the rest is history. Almost 4 year later, and the business has grown into something bigger than myself. I do this full-time, working seven days a week to provide gourmet, health-driven teas to the community. This business has changed my life and I have very big ambitions. Every time we reach a new milestone, another one arises. This is most difficult work I have ever done. I play every roll within my business from labeling bottles to selling teas on the side of the street, but despite all the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this lifestyle for anything else. I have 5 brothers and sisters who all pitch in to keep this business going, turning Tunde’s Tea Shop into a true family business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe most entrepreneurs would admit that it is a very long and arduous road to success in this line of work. Turning an idea into something that can generate income doesn’t come easy, there are many challenges that naturally arise. One challenge that comes to mind is the simple struggle of knowing what to do next. As a business owner, I do not report to a supervisor, therefore I have to direct myself. Starting with zero capital was very difficult swell, because there was n money to re invest back into the business. Even now, the big plans I have, takes a considerable amount of money that seem very difficult to achieve without funding. In this line of work, tomorrow’s sales are not promised, so there is a profound uncertainty in the generation of resources. The fluctuation of the economy plays hg roll my pricing, shipping and supplies. Being my own boss, means that I am must direct myself and practice self disciple. There is nobody telling me what to do. I am fully accountable of my success and failure. That responsibility can be daunting sometimes… how do you know your making the right decisions?
We’ve been impressed with Tunde’s Tea Shop, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tunde’s Tea Shop is a beverage company specializing in handcrafted tea blends inspired by global traditions. We provide an assortment of gourmet teas with distinct flavors and benefits. Our top seller is a vegan Thai Iced Tea, made with a rich mix of Coconut and Almond milk. Our second fan favorite is the Golden Tea; a peppermint, Ginger, Turmeric and Lemon based drink that we slow brew for 30 hours. Lastly, our Organic Japanese Matcha with Oolong is an earthy and robust energy booster with many other benefits. Each of our teas are enjoyed by many people, all on different health journeys. Often times, people avoid better food choices because they associate them with being bland, bitter, or lacking in flavor. At Tunde’s Tea Shop, we challenge that idea by creating flavorful, slow brewed teas with real health benefits.
Health and wellness have always been an important part of my life. My father is a holistic practitioner and my mother makes medicine out of local plants and herbs. I was always fascinated with healing through what we consume and I found a connection to that passion through tea. We wish to shed light on the countless natural remedies that exist, especially for those living in marginalized communities. Many of us share upbringings where wellness hasn’t always been accessible or prioritized. That is what motivates us to change the narrative through tea that is both nourishing and delicious.
Almost a year ago, I suffered a serious accident that required surgery and took away my ability to walk for months. Even through the worst pain I’ve ever experienced and learning how to walk again, I never gave up. With the support of my family and community, I was able to keep Tunde’s Tea Shop going, and even grow it, despite everything. During my darkest moments, I reminded myself: “This is part of your story. This is what will make you great” What makes me a successful entrepreneur is my refusal to quit, my ability to adapt, and my commitment to seeing this vision through, no matter what.
