Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Henman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Atlanta and recall going on field trips to Oakland Cemetery, walking my dog through the cemetery when I lived in the Grant Park neighborhood, driving by it on my way to and from work — it had always been a constant in my Atlanta background. By chance, I saw my job posted on LinkedIn and figured I’d give it ago. I knew HOF Executive Director David Moore from a previous job, and figured it always helps to have an “in.” I sent David a message, but he never replied! Luckily, my resume made it to the top of the list on my own merits, which is neat.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My role was a completely new one at the cemetery, so there was definitely a learning curve in terms of building a marketing strategy from the ground up. It’s been very rewarding, and I work with a great group of people who made the transition enjoyable and easy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Historic Oakland Foundation – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Historic Oakland Cemetery is Atlanta’s oldest public burial ground. It was established in 1850 and today, Historic Oakland Foundation works in partnership with the City of Atlanta to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Oakland. We are definitely one of Atlanta’s more unique attractions, there aren’t many cemeteries that also double as a city park. So, in addition to vital green-space, we offer Atlantans a place to reflect on the city’s history and learn about the people who helped make Atlanta what it is today.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Oakland Cemetery’s staff is growing by leaps and bounds, and I think we’re in a really good place for the coming year. We have some exciting things on the horizon (that, unfortunately, I can’t talk about yet!) On a personal note, I’m looking forward to doing a bit more traveling in 2018.
