Today we’d like to introduce you to Randolph Samuel.
Randolph, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a self-taught woodworker, which started off as a passion, then a hobby, and now a family business! I worked for Home Depot in high school and while in college. While there, I attended several of the company-sponsored classes and sessions that taught me the basics about woodworking and maintenance. These classes helped with customer questions as they came in the store, but I ultimately retained much of what was taught and just continued to build from there. I would do little projects around the house as time permitted.
Fast forward to 2020, while being stuck in the house on during the stay-at-home order due to COVID-19, I had time to complete more projects. I started posting them on social media. My friends and family started requesting items. We got so many requests that we decided to start official business. We operate as a family business. While I do all of the woodworking, my wife and kids help with all things behind the scenes! Most, if not all, of our custom builds are touched in some way by our two boys and the emails, estimates, invoices, and business stuff are handled by my wife, and we typically do on-site consultations and deliveries together when possible.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been not having all of the tools needed when woodworking. Therefore, with each project completed, I typically will purchase a new tool that helps with the efficiency and quality of work. One other struggle is trying to keep up with all of the order requests we’ve started to receive while still maintaining a full-time job.
Please tell us about The Brandolph Collection.
I’m a woodworker. Our company specializes in custom furniture for the home. Most of our requests are for items that you just can’t find at generic furniture stores like say, Wayfair. For example, while you may find a barn door or console table, the dimensions just don’t fit for their particular situation. One client searched for over 5-years for a front entry to the table to fit in a unique space in her house. She came across our page, and we were able to make a table specific to the dimensions of the space. We had another client that requested a very large set of barn doors for his farmhouse, which you can’t just purchase from a store, so we had to make custom doors.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have several childhood memories, but the one that sticks out the most is helping my mom assemble furniture that she would purchase. We would both open up the instruction manual and get to work. As a matter of fact, my mother still calls me over to do all of her assemblies whenever she makes large furniture purchases. I pretend like I’m annoyed by her requests, but I secretly still love it. Besides, she always feeds me well after I’m done.
