Meet Sabrina Washington of Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Washington

Hi Sabrina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began back in 2019 with a trip to my local thrift shop. I had always been into second-hand thrifting for items to style my first apartment with, until I realized I could find solid donated furniture pieces and turn them into an extra source of income. My first sale was a tall ornate wooden bookshelf, that was in need of a paint makeover and some added details, such as new hardware and some accent gold leaf for that added pop factor! That particular buyer still follows along my journey to this day and I am truly grateful that they are still enamored with their purchase. This is what motivated me to continue on and perfect my skills in sourcing solid furniture pieces as I went along. Fast forward to today and now my home is filled with solid vintage and antique pieces, ready to be restored and refinished to add to my collection of work. My partner has also played a large role in helping with the wood finishing aspect of each piece as he has become a master in the artistry of the proper sanding and polishing techniques to achieve that flawless wood grain finish.
Over the last few years I have dedicated all of the furniture and home goods that have been sourced, flipped and sold to an Instagram page to showcase my work and inspire other furniture artists. This allows previous, current and future buyers to view and follow along with the process of each piece as they come to life. Also Facebook Marketplace has been a huge platform for selling and sourcing items as well as meeting potential buyers. I am so proud of how far I’ve come and I am excited to continue to pour into my business and evolve as I go!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning it was smooth sailing, as pure passion and eagerness was the drive to get started in this industry. People were buying left and right, especially during the Covid era when everyone was stuck at home and wanted to pour back into their space. Also this particular industry was very limited in its creators as there just weren’t that many people refinishing furniture at the time. This was a positive factor in selling and my pieces were being sold effortlessly.
The market for refinished furniture is still viable, although many people have started doing it themselves, therefore creating a larger community of resellers and furniture artists. In turn, this makes it a bit more challenging to sell at full asking price without receiving some lowball offers. I find myself becoming a bit frustrated with some of these offers at times, as I give a lot of my time, effort and supplies to help create these beautiful pieces. The key to overcoming some of these obstacles is to remain professional and educate potential buyers on the amount of effort and time it truly takes to produce a finished and solid piece of work.
There are times when I price a piece to sell fast in order to make room for new projects and there are times when I price appropriately for the many hours that were put into a particular project. All in all, my goal is to continue to learn the ins and outs of this industry and remain fair in how I operate my business as well as interact with potential clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In my creative career of specializing in refinished, restored, as well as hand-painted furniture pieces, I take immense pride in the progress I’ve made in this industry. My meticulous eye for detail and unique approach to color schemes distinguish my work from others. Whether breathing new life into vintage finds or creating bespoke hand-painted designs, my focus is on craftsmanship and individuality, setting new standards in the furniture artistry.
