Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Owens.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Atlanta with very little money when I was 20 years old, during the pandemic. I just wanted a chance at what I’ve always wanted — owning my own business. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to build something of my own. I wanted to be in charge of something, and as a creative, I wanted the freedom to express my creativity while also profiting from it.
Honestly, I got here with God, my spouse, and a whole lot of faith. And a little bit of delusion too — because some of the things I believed for myself probably seemed far-fetched at the time. But sometimes a little delusion can take you a long way.
That’s really how I started and how I got where I am today. I stayed consistent. So for me, it was a little delusion, a lot of consistency, and God.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, especially with the economy the way it is now. Back then, when I first moved to Atlanta to start my business, I went through a lot of struggles. My car got totaled, so I didn’t even have transportation to get around. Thankfully, my family stepped in and helped get me back and forth to work, and I also found an Uber driver willing to do personal rides for me, which helped a lot during that time. It was literally just work, back home, and repeating that cycle every day.
While I was working these jobs, I still didn’t even know how to cornrow on the scalp yet. I had a mannequin head with me, and in between work shifts, I would sit there practicing and teaching myself how to braid. I was also spending my free time learning about business, branding, and how to build something for myself.
There were definitely a lot of financial hardships along the way, but I just kept going. I stayed consistent even when things felt uncertain, and I kept believing that eventually everything I was working toward would pay off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hair vendor specializing in raw hair extensions. I’m known for my 50-inch hair, my creative photo shoots, and the versatility of my styles and brand.
What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come. A lot of times, we focus so much on where we currently are that we don’t realize how much progress we’ve actually made. But when I look back at where I once was and where I prayed to be, I can honestly say I’m living a prayer right now.
What really sets me apart is versatility. I’m not one of those brands that only focuses on one specific demographic or only wants to showcase one type of person. Of course, every business should know its audience, but my brand is bigger than that. I want to see all kinds of people wearing my hair — no matter the race, gender, or background.
I also love showcasing my hair in creative ways outside of traditional photo shoots. Of course, I can do the classic beauty shots holding bundles, but I enjoy creating experiences and visuals that feel different — outside shoots, beach shoots, editorial concepts, and creative styling. I really love showing how diverse and versatile my brand truly is.
That’s what Versatile Hair Collection represents to me — creativity, diversity, confidence, and versatility.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that the vision God gave you was given to you for a reason. Everyone around you isn’t always going to understand it or hyperfixate on it the way you do, because it wasn’t their vision — it was yours.
I’ve also learned that when you truly want to get where you’re trying to go, you have to make more sacrifices than you originally think, especially in business. Your business becomes like your baby. So you have to be willing to sacrifice not only for yourself, but also for what you’re building.
