Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Baker.
Sean, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story starts as a kid growing up in the Bronx of NY City. I inherited A Love for the Arts from My Parents; Music, Theater & Film especially. I come from a proud & rich Caribbean background/bloodline. My mother from the island of St.Kitts and my father from Guyana. They were immersed in arts & culture. My father was very eclectic. He DJ’s and listened to just about everything from Reggae, Calypso, Soca, Blues, Jazz, R&B, Country & Hip-Hop. My mother just loved to sing. This stemmed from her singing in choir back home as a youth. In Migrating to the states of course, their palate for the arts increased.
My mother introduced me to the world of theater. She took me to experience Broadway musicals like Sarafina, while my father had an infinity for film. It seemed like he knew Every classic, even trivia facts about the actors., who won Awards, etc.. Because of my father, I discovered my Greatest Acting Mentor (in my head), Sidney Poitier.
As influential as they were in my then budding passion for the arts, I met some resistance In pursuing it. I wasn’t afforded the opportunity to attend the performing arts school of my choice. I instead was urged to focus on Academics and attended Cardinal Spellman HS in the Bronx. Subsequently, I reunited with my love for the arts and further honed my gifts by quitting football to Join the Gospel Choir and the theater program of the Cardinal Players. I got some slack for that, lol However, THIS was the beginning of a beautiful journey of a dream that was almost deferred. Along this journey, unbeknownst to me, this road was paved with roadblocks, trauma, hardship & loss.
Although my gifts kept me out of trouble, for the most part, I still had my experiences. OG’s or (Elders) & few friends that knew me and my gifts constantly encouraged me to come out of & stay away from street life; to focus on my passion. “Stop Play’n” is what I would be told, in short. I went hard and heavy with music. I forged an alliance with a production team & family called Arkatechbeatz.
Who I’m forever building with to this day. With them, I honed my skills as a singer, songwriter, & producer. Because of them I met, worked with produced, sang, & wrote for some of the biggest names in the music business from big pun, nas, to Wutang’s Raekwon, shorty Lo, Mya and others. As an artist and performer, I toured NY City performing at infamous places like SOB’S, released R&B mixed tapes, signed JV deals with Universal, and was Blessed to have had Digital Singles chart on Billboard in the company of Greats like Beyonce & Justin Timberlake.
It was during the course of my journey as I was relentlessly pursuing this part of my dream that I experienced one of the toughest moments of my life. My mother was diagnosed with Cancer. Watching her Battle this treacherous disease, she inspired me to go harder. Whenever I finished Performing at shows or Studio sessions, I would go and attend to her, whether at home, the Hospital, or Nursing home at the time. I would tell her about how my Performances went, etc.. When my mother grew tired and succumbed to her illness, her transition crushed me. My sister Stephanie, Father, Aunt Phyll and I did All that we could. When she passed, some of my passion seemingly went with her.
Fast forward through multiple family deaths after her, I moved to Atlanta to start over. I wasn’t singing as much. I had continued working a 9 to 5 job in insurance that I transferred with and held down for 16 years. Also working part time as a Bouncer in bars, and doing private Security at times. While doing this, I rediscovered my other passion, in Acting.
I started to retrain those muscles again by performing in local plays; Doing everything from original bodies of work to classic period pieces like “A Raisin In The Sun”. Just as I was getting back on track with pursuing my passion, My Father took ill and eventually lost to HIS fight with Cancer. His transition was quicker than my mother’s. However, the loss was just as painful, if not more now, with my sister and I losing both parents.
If I learned anything at all through my trials & losses, it’s that life is precious & short. LIVE NOW! All we have is Now. I soon after decided to leave my corporate job of 16 years and pursue my love for acting full time. This decision was strategically made once I prayed about it and felt it was time, especially after putting in the fundamental work of classes workshops etc..
After a slew of background work & appearing in some tremendous independent films I was blessed with a major opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest films of my career at that time; “All Eyez On Me.” GOD was my Agent. I had already booked a role on Tyler Perry’s “If Loving You is wrong”. I had gone on to be featured in films like the faith-based movie “A Question of Faith,” I had my 1st lead role in a film called “Making Moves.” As my faith and drive got stronger, so did my opportunities and roles. Landing projects like “Tales on BET,” All American” CW, “Bigger” on BET Plus, “American Soul” on BET, “Queen Of The South” in the USA. The latest installment of the movie “Shaft”.
Most recently I was blessed with the opportunity to be a Guest Star on “FBI”. CBS. Right Now, I am currently a guest star recurring in a TV Series called “SWAGGER” for Apple TV/CBS. The journey as been surreal. Every project I work, I feel I honor my parents’ memory.
In addition to being in front of the camera, behind the camera, I often coach 1st time actors, aspiring actors and working actors in either sharpening their skills, or preparing for auditions, or already booked roles. I recently coached on a film shot in South Dakota Comprised of 1st time acting talent from the Lakota Tribe. A truly fulfilling experience. And it’s also important to know, that my passion for music hasn’t left me, as I’m currently working on music with an artist who goes by the name (Salute) @salutecug.
I currently have a single and video out with him called “Triggered” which is available on all streaming platforms. We will also being work on future music together with @Arkatechbeatz. I also started a Production Company named (ANEUXSTUDIOS). @ANEUXSTUDIOS partnered with two other super talented creatives @Bryenlenis & @Roninskai.
Our Production Company specializes in creating original content, working alongside other creatives to help tell their stories through professional visual Aesthetics. We currently shot & produced Season 1 of an Action Miniseries called “One Way Out” That is currently available on YouTube. The reason why I’m so honored to humbly share these accomplishments, is because I know where I came from. I came from the concrete jungle where dreams either survived or died every day. I climbed out of a well of doubt, despair, hopelessness, & depression.
My daily affirmations and prayers are what keeps me going. I make it my business to encourage and celebrate those around me. In whatever way I can, because it’s needed. We as artists and creatives go through so much for the passion and love of what we do; and for what we aspire to accomplish. I, for one get inspired seeing others Win! I also know what it’s like to need an extra push, pep talk, or a healthy dose of Inspiration. I Always encourage people to #KEEPGOING Because that’s All I know to do. That’s how I got here. This is how I survived. Faith, Determination, Hard Work, Perserverance. I live by 2 Mantras:
1. “Do it with passion, Or Not at All!”
2. The only way I lose is if I quit. So
If I keep going, you gotta see me! I would like to encourage our readers; No matter what, don’t give up on you. Live your life, & set the tone. #SETTHETONE “It’s The mind that makes the man” -SB
Peace, Love, & Light. –Sean Baker
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was not an easy road at all. I struggled in pursuing the Balance of chasing my Purpose & emotionally dealing with the loss and sickness of Loved ones; Even in experiencing Failed Relationships along the way. And as much, as I believe in myself, I sometimes found it difficult to have those around that believe in me the way I wanted them to. This is in business as well as personal life. I had to eventually Overstand and be ok with ME Being my Strongest Believer, aside from my apparent immediate family like my sister, Aunt, & Day One Fam. I rocked on and pushed forward, knowing ultimately God got me.
