Meet Shanon Thomas of HNM Glam Spot in Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanon Thomas.

Shanon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. I started doing hair when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I always knew how to do hair because I was a great mimicker. I could pretty much recreate any hairstyle I saw. And my friends from the neighborhood were my Ginny pigs. Hairstyling always came natural, it wasn’t until my adult years I decided to go to school for cosmetology. My dad was pretty adamant about going to school so he made sure I went to college. After I graduated from Clayton State University, I decided to pursue a career in the Beauty industry. I became a Master Cosmetologist after finishing Atlanta Technical College, where I fell in love with makeup and nail artistry as well. And, the Glam Goddess was born. I am not only a hairstylist but in fact, a makeup artist, nail technician and eyelash specialist. I enjoy doing all 4 services equally, they balance my day to day life and keeps me on my toes sort of speak in this industry. I also still maintain a full-time position at the School of Medicine at Emory University. When I finished my cosmetology program, I decided to open up my own Home Salon in the basement of my house. I have been a Master Cosmetologist for 3 years and I enjoy every minute of it.

Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has definitely been a rough road. For the 1st few years, I felt like I was going backward in life. I felt I should have started the cosmetology program right out of high school instead of waiting years later. Things are a lot different than it was when I was in my mother’s kitchen twirling marcel irons and braiding hair, but I didn’t let that stop me. I took extra classes from some of the best instructors who were teaching so that I can learn the proper techniques to be a better stylist, makeup artist, nail tech and eyelash specialist. Atlanta is a very diverse but competitive city, and everybody who is anybody does hair, nails and makeup here. You have to constantly advertise your work and show to the world why you are the best stylist to get the job done. I have had to learn marketing strategies and also learn how to use Social Media to my advantage. It has not been easy but all worth it. I would not change anything, because I have learned so much, not only about the industry but about myself. I have learned what type of person I want to be and how I want to impact the world.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Atlanta is a really good city for the beauty industry because of its diversity. You will learn a lot from being here and interacting with people in Atlanta. There are so many different avenues to choose to gain success from. The sky is truly the limit. It is all about how you see things. You just have to stay focus and grounded. For people just starting out, I would recommend gaining experience in a smaller city on the outer part of Atlanta first, just to get your feet wet and see what areas strike you best. You definitely have to be strong-minded, focus and ready to grind.
