Meet Shenita Vanish and Priscilla Cooper of Spatastik in Lithonia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shenita Vanish and Priscilla Cooper.

Shenita and Priscilla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Spatastik: A Salon for Kids was the brain child of a parent frustrated by her inability to braid her daughter’s hair coupled with the lack of child-focused hair care providers.

Duplicating child friendly salons from the DC metropolitan area, the salon was started in Lithonia, GA in September 2012 with the goal of duplicating the salon’s success to, at least, 4 additional communities in the greater Atlanta area. The salon is made up of natural hair care providers who have a particular interest in supporting children, their hair care and the families that love them!

Has it been a smooth road?
Managing the salon has not been a smooth road. At the beginning of the salon’s history, we had to educate the community about the importance of having a salon focused on children’s hair. We also had to educate team members about the importance of maintaining a child friendly salon.

Once we showed the community that we were “here to stay” our road has become smoother and not only are we a part of the community, but we are also a part of our customer’s family.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Spatastik story. Tell us more about the business.
Spatastik: A Salon for Kids specializes in providing child hair care for young people 18 months old to 84 (and all ages in between). We specialize in providing natural hair care that includes shampoos, conditioner, and blow dry services. Braids, extensions, and presses are our specialties. We also provide beads and ribbons.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There is a swift happening in the hair care community with more individuals remaining natural instead of using chemicals, weaves and extensions, Our organization is helping parents and children to gain the knowledge they need to maintain natural hair. We are excited that we were the first dedicated children salon on the east side of Atlanta.
