Meet Sophie Brunett of Thesophiesofar Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Brunett.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a 22 year old visual artist. I specialize in oil painting and digital art. I am new to Atlanta. I just moved here in September 2017 and I love it here! There are so many opportunities for young artists, creatives and entrepreneurs. I find inspiration through music and pop/urban culture. I really enjoy creating album art for up and coming musicians, as well as painting whatever inspires me at the moment in my free time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Moving to Atlanta was pretty difficult. I am originally from Clarksburg, West Virginia, then moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for school. After I graduated, I knew I wanted to live in a city. I spent a summer in Los Angeles for a graphic design internship and didn’t think it was the right fit for me. I love the south, so I decided Atlanta was the right move. It was a lot harder than I expected, not only being farther away from my family, but not knowing anyone here prior to moving. I have been here 7 months and feel like, I am just now settling in and meeting the right people.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in graphic design. Most of my work is either freelance design that I sell as prints on my webstore, thesophiesofar.com. I also love designing album art, electronic press kits and merchandise for up coming musicians, logo design for small businesses and helping people/other companies brand themselves. I also paint as a hobby, but find that I enjoy it more than design sometimes. I usually paint whatever or whoever is inspiring me at the time. I don’t really like sketching out what I am going to paint before I paint it. I just like to start and see where the painting ends up. I also do commissioned paintings as well.

What were you like growing up?
When I was growing up, I was shy but enjoyed playing sports. I have definitely broken out of my shell a lot since then. I played basketball from the third grade, until I graduated high school and softball from around middle school until I graduated. I was also very into music. I began playing the piano when I was in kindergarten. Then, in fourth grade, I decided I wanted to learn how to play the drums. Finally, my senior year, I taught myself how to play the guitar, although I’m not very good at it, I know a few songs. Between the sports practices and games year round and weekly music lessons, I didn’t really have time for any other hobbies. Art wasn’t really a huge part of my life until around my junior year of high school. I hit a pretty rough patch in my life that year and realized I could express my feelings through drawing in a journal. My high school art teacher was very wise and creative. Although, our art classes were never really taken seriously, he had a certain way of teaching me life lessons that still stick with me. It wasn’t until my senior year, I wanted to go to school for graphic design, when my art teacher bought a Mac computer and pen and “donated” it to our classroom to use.
