Today we’d like to introduce you to Srinivas Kilambi.
Srinivas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a B.S in Chemical Engineering from IIT (India’s MIT). I did my MS and Ph.D. in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson and University of Tennessee respectively. I am also a CFA from India. My first startup was in 1988 in India. I set up India’s first Chitosan from crab shells manufacturing plant and was awarded India’s Best Upcoming Entrepreneur award in 1990.
My first startups in the US were Commodore Separation Technologies (NASDAQ: CXOT) where I was the CSO and Commodore Applied Technologies (CXI) where I was the Scientific Adviser. Both companies went to US IPOs in 1996 and 1997. I was the Chief Science Officer of Tata Chemicals in 2003-5 and CEO of Reliance India Bio-Refinery (2005-7). Both Tatas and Reliance are $75 B companies.
I returned to the US in 2007 and started Sriya Innovations Inc which was funded by Kleiner Perkins for $22M. The company was later acquired in 2011 by a consortium of investors led by BASF, WM, Total and Gates Foundation. I have received over 15 patents on the technology I invented which used super-critical water to convert biomass to sugars in a second compared to 5 days with enzymes. My board members included Bill Joy (Co-Founder of Sun Microsystems); John Doerr; Bill Gates.
I then started Vedecem with KP funding and later with Holcim funding to produce green cement (cement which can be produced fo 33% lower GHGs/emissions and that too in a minute without a kiln).
Finally, in 2015, I started DXi, my present company.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like with any entrepreneur, I have had my share of successes and obstacles and even failures. My first startup did not reach its full potential as in the era before internet and modern connectivity, it took months to get and fulfill export orders and this led to huge cash flow crunch. Hence, I had to sell the company in 1991 to a bunch of local investors.
My first tech startup Dilato failed as it was very ahead of its times. Dilato started in 2000 was an AI-based Expert System for science and engineering solutions. We even got a term sheet from Fizzion, a Coca-Cola Incubator, but we could not succeed due to 9/11, dotcom bubble burst and resultant market crash
Verdecem for all its technical success including many patents and awards (North America 2011 technology Innovator Winner, GA Technology Innovator winner, WEF 2010 Finalist and many more) did not reach its full potential as each cement plant requires over 100s of million $ in capital investments.

What were you like growing up?
Right from childhood, I have been a thinker, innovator and a disruptor. When most kids look for jobs, I was interested in startups and technology. I took a lot of risks when most look towards the safety of established careers. I also had a passion for futuristic technologies and all of my companies, inventions etc are ahead of its time and have won a lot of accolades and awards.
I have a lot of interest in sports especially cricket, football and tennis. I am an avid movie fan
