Meet Stephanie Andrews of Balance Design in Candler Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Andrews.

Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I actually started this company while on maternity leave with my son in 2001. I had been in the marketing business and was used to working 50-60 hours a week. With the baby, I wanted to find some balance to be a mom and work, thus the literal birth of “balance design”. My mom was an interior designer, my dad was a carpenter-it was something that I grew up with-so I thought it “can’t be that hard…”

16 years later, I am still looking for balance, but it’s been a beautiful, educational, and sometimes maddening ride. I had a lot to learn from how to measure, how to create vendor relationships and negotiate, to important stuff like how to bill. I am lucky now, because I have an amazing team that creates, supports and stays organized so that we can bring beautiful design that is curated especially for each client. I am also very fortunate that my husband, Ed was on board from the very beginning, believing in me and giving lots of great ideas.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never smooth-but you still have to inspire confidence that “this kind of sh*t happens all of the time”. Like when the delivery truck on installation day did not notice the clearance for the bridge under ponce in a rainstorm and tore off the top of the truck and destroyed a custom sofa….

Please tell us about Balance Design.
Balance Design has this secret way of getting to know our clients, so that our interiors look like our clients did it themselves just with their own really good taste. It’s not fussy, it shows their personalities through their travels, their art and their interests. We pull it all together in a way they never considered yet they are proud of.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is sailing on Lake Erie with my grandpa, Jack. He was always my biggest supporter. When I went to college in Florida, my grandparents were there, helping with food and laundry. When I got my first real job, and then when I got married and had my son, Jack and then my daughter, Allie, he was so proud.
