Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Price.
Sydney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Sydney Price, creative strategist and content creator helping entrepreneurs and businesses develop their brands to build strong audiences online with meaning filled content strategy.
In 2015, I started my YouTube channel in search of a platform to authentically express myself. Now, almost five years later, with over 200,000 views attained I’ve expanded my dream to include people around the world looking for ways to share their stories and create meaningful content. It is my intention to bring innovative strategy and a unique creative approach to impacting and connecting with your audience. I’m also in my senior year of studying Psychology at Spelman College in Atlanta and use my studies to help me develop content that attracts and engages with my digital audience.
Before I started creating visual content, I was an avid writer and performed my poetry often at local slams and talent shows. My brand started to gain a larger following in 2018, when my poetry videos went viral on Twitter. As a direct result of that I started creating content around personal development and relationships that helped me grow to the platform I have now. I realized that my true passion was to create content that was meaningful and connected people through shared experiences.
My journey to starting my own marketing business started a few years ago when I first began freelancing. I started off taking photos but later expanded my work to include videography as well. I’ve actually been working with video for more than 5 years as I started out on YouTube at 15 years old (whew!). I basically grew up on YouTube because of the way I taught myself everything I know from editing video to shooting brand photography and now developing strong content strategy for businesses. Fun Fact: When I first started creating ANYTHING it was all on my phone. I didn’t have nearly as much equipment as I do now and it took a lot of time for me to build up to everything I now own. However, I was very persistent even at a young age and have sacrificed sleep, time and a lot more to get to where I am today.
As well as being a creative, I’m also a business woman at heart and have tried to start multiple businesses throughout high school into college. Every job I have had has been to support my art. I was never the girl that wanted flashy clothes or even had my nails done regularly. I only ever asked for camera equipment and business cards for Christmas. So recently, in October 2019, everything changed when I decided to take the leap and start freelancing seriously. I’ve since interned and worked with digital media entrepreneurs and brands like Ashley Stewart, Creme of Nature, Palmers, UrbanSkinRX and more to create content and have worked closely with small and large companies to develop digital media marketing strategies. Looking back on my journey, it wasn’t linear by any means but I’m happy to say I pushed through and now have an official LLC at 20 years old! That’s me. Excited to meet you!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think every creatives journey is far from easy. Especially as a black creator, you almost always struggle with imposter syndrome and overworking yourself. I personally come from a family rooted in Jamaican culture so the path I’m currently on was never presented to me growing up. It took a lot of hard conversations and leaps of faith to end up where I am now and I’m still working towards where I want to be ultimately. Along the way, I definitely have had moments of self-doubt but what I have learned in those moments is that everything I’ve done prior has led me to where I am now and will continue to carry me forward. One piece of advice given to me was that if you’re in the room you’re meant to be there – so keep going.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SydTheCreative story. Tell us more about the business.
SydTheCreative LLC, is a business and brand with a mission to create content that people connect to. From the emerging entrepreneur to the certified CEO I want to help people create content that they see themselves in and that also reaches their audience on a personal level. I like to cater my services to black and brown people because I rarely see us represented in the digital space.
On the business side, I help entrepreneurs and business owners create structure in their business and build out their goals through content strategy. Content is definitely a strong way to communicate who you are and what you do in business and I find that a lot of businesses don’t have actual strategies in place for the content they create. Now, strategy is great but I like to make it personal. Authenticity is a lost art in my opinion so I like to connect back to that as much as possible by making sure my clients are creating content that they would actually watch as well.
On the brand side, I like to create content that connects. My Instagram has ALOT of free resources and value for business owners and creators who want to start organically growing their communities and creating quality content. My YouTube channel however, is almost like a digital journal. I like to keep track of where I am in my journey and it also gives my viewers an inside look into my story. Everyone sees the final product but few people see the process. I’m a thinker and I love to learn new things but sharing my story has gotten me further than anything I’ve learned about digital media marketing thus far. I’m proud to say that after years of tweaking my brand I haven’t lost sight of who I am at my core, a person that just loves to create.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say that I’ve been blessed with a lot of support through mentorship as well as family and friends to help guide me on my business journey. There’s a lot of noise on the internet and in this field in particular it’s crucial to receive effective feedback on how you can improve.
I’m also grateful to simply be in the room and hear from amazing people. Throughout my college journey alone I’ve participated in a number of internships as well as being a Walton x UNCF K-12 Education Fellow and a part of the 2020 HBCU in LA Cohort. A lot of my jobs have simply come from being in the room and asking questions. So, I think those experiences are priceless and have definitely propelled me forward in my business.
