Meet Tahirah Naeemah of Crowns Blessed by Queen in East Point

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tahirah Naeemah.

Tahirah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
What do you want to be when you grow up? That’s the question we all hear in grade school and my response would always be a cosmetologist. My mother bought me my first mannequin in 4th grade as a Christmas gift. Now that I think about it she probably wanted a break from me playing in her hair which is laughable. Fast forward to 8th grade and all through high school, I would do everyone’s hair who would allow me. I say I’ve been doing hair since the age of 13 because that’s when I received compensation for my braiding services. It wasn’t much but it was a start and allowed me to keep pushing forward. After high school, I went on to attend Georgia Southern University where I received a degree in Recreational Therapy with a minor in Health Education and Promotion.

During college, I had work-study jobs like working in the gym and working as a Specialist for children with disabilities in after school but before the day was over I’d have a client for a Loc Retwist or braids waiting for me. In 2015 my roommate and I started my Instagram account and came up with the name Crowns Blessed by Queen for my business. She created my logo and gave me the push I needed to take things seriously. After college, I moved to Miami and while looking for jobs in my field, I rented a booth at Rich Girls Salon located in North Miami Beach. After two years of networking, learning the ends and outs of the industry, perfecting my craft of Locs, Braids, and Brow Maintenance I decided to move back to Georgia and enroll in cosmetology school. Due to finish in December of 2019, I have plans of taking my career further and offering a wider range of services some of which include nails and waxing. I’m excited to see what will unfold and what clients I’ll meet on this next phase of my journey.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As far as my craft, it hasn’t been too difficult. I have the ability to watch something being done and duplicate it. I’m great at re-creating a look. The biggest struggle thus far has been paying for cosmetology school out of pocket while trying to book clients and not having enough energy at the end of the day because I’m in school full time. I’ve struggled with guilt from leaving clients in Miami, but I try to return often to service them. I just keep reminding myself of the bigger picture and it’ll all be worth it in the end. I’m so close to finishing my short term goal!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Crowns Blessed by Queen – what should we know?
Crowns Blessed by Queen was coined in 2015. I specialize in Loc Maintenance, Braids, Brows and Mink Lash Extensions but I look forward to offering new service packages such as waxing, facials, and nails. I’m most proud of the consistency of my work. I believe my ability to connect with my clients and make them feel welcomed and comfortable sets me apart. It’s an experience I want to create. My clients aren’t just a number.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother has always backed me in whatever it is I chose to do. Her approval and support of my career choice means the world to me! Ella Ferguson (hairstylist in Florida), Tammy (artist and owner of Totally U Salon in East Point, GA), and Vanessa Vassall (dedicated client and friend) have all been influential in the progression of my career. The words they share and support they give keeps me focused and striving for better. They acknowledge a woman’s light and helps them shine brighter. Courtney Coprich (Graphic designer/Editor for Tyler Perry Studios) has also helped from taking my ideas and creating my logo to helping me brainstorm my business name. I’m truly grateful for them all.
