Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Monae.
Hi Tiffany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So I am the oldest girl of nine siblings. Being the oldest girl with four younger sisters, you had to know how to do some hair to help out mom. My mom was a stylist for a while and she took me to a hair show at the age of maybe 12 or 13 and my passion began there. Even though I loved hair and always wanted to be a hairstylist once I graduated high school, my plans changed. My senior year I came pregnant with my first child. Then a year later, my second child. So here I was with two kids by the age of 19.
From then on, you work and take care of your family. 2007, I gave birth to another child and still working dead-end jobs. I knew at this point I had to do something better. My church started 40 days of Purpose. And I took heed and listen to God and in 2008, went to hair school at 28 and licensed by 29. I continued going to classes and hair shows and was placed every time in the right presence and my career flourished. I mean we blessed to take classes and mentorship under some of the industry best such as Sherita Cherry, Johnnie Wright, Miki Wright, Shakeya Miles and Patric Bradley! Fast forward to now. I am the Owner of Glam Hair Studio, a premier hair salon and makeup studio in Jacksonville, FL. I work alongside eight amazing stylists, assistants, braiders, and makeup artists. We are a booth rental and commissioned-based salon. And when I tell you, our Glam Squad has helped me not only become a top salon in our city but also helped me become a better educator, mentor and artist as well. With having a great team, I am not bound to my chair and can freelance throughout the country as a traveling stylist and educator. Also working as a Stylist with the World-renowned Legion of Glam under the direction of Hair King Terrence Davidson.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Listen! Smooth ride? NOOO! By far this journey has been rocky! Even though rewarding I’ve had to question myself like, woman WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I’ve had plenty of losses, losses that some would not and could not bounce back from. With being a black woman owner, very mild-mannered, you will have people to always doubt you or attempt to tear you down. And sometimes simply because they aren’t you. In my location, I’m in now. Two months after we moved in we were almost taken out by Hurricane Irma. But by the grace of God, my salon was spared. But I know others who weren’t so lucky. It’s not always easy. I’ve been to a point where I’ve had ten stylists and a point where I had one. I had one stylist who tried to make all the stylists leave with her. But I was ok with that because one thing about me God didn’t bless me with a salon to be stressed or drama’d out. And because I pride myself and salon with integrity and humility, some won’t understand. I trust God and because of this, I now understand, I might fumble but I will not fall.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a stylist, I would have to say I don’t have a specialty. I’m blessed to be well versed and well rounded. I have no problem learning to excel in my areas of expertise. I may not be perfect but I do not want anyone to sit in my chair and I can’t do something. I think in Jacksonville I’m known for extensions, hair coloring, finger waving, and crochet braiding. I love doing a little bit of everything, though. I am most proud that I’ve been used as a vessel to not only make women look and feel better about themselves but as an educator and mentor, I am able to connect and help other businesswomen. I have had the opportunity to host and put together some of the best classes, seminars, and events my city has seen over the last ten years. Businesses have been birthed and flourishing to this day. We are a salon family that cares about its clients and the health of a client’s hair. We pride ourselves on not having you wait all day to get your hair done. We are real people that can actually do real hair! And our clients love us! They love us so much that we’ve been recognized by magazines, companies and nominated for awards for being great at what we do! And that alone sets us apart from others.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the fact that even in a city with thousands of great people (stylist, makeup artist, models, etc.), you can just simply be yourself! I would say the least thing I hate and in the city is traffic lol!
