Meet Timothy Smith of Eleven23 Capital Advisors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Smith.

Hi Timothy , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started slowly. Wish I knew what I knew today. I was slow learner, but once I figured out my path forward I implemented new things quickly. Where I am today is a 14-year overnight success. It’s simply years of compounding of doing the same habits over and over again. My coach talked to me early on about “keystone habits”. The concept comes from a book called Power of Habit. The idea is you reflect on daily activities and identify the one habit that acts as a domino for all the other important things to get done. Once you have that, you know how to define a good day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. Business ownership is never smooth. Struggles every day. When you don’t have a salary and other people rely on your ability to bring in business or clients it’s never easy. It weighs on you. All the time. Every time you try something new there’s potential for a struggle and we try new things A LOT. But that’s how you grow. One of our core values in our business is Grow or Die. Seems a bit extreme, but that’s how it works. To quote a mentor, you’re either green and growing or ripe and rotting.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our firm operates in the space of Financial Independence Planning. It’s a subset of Financial Planning. We help our clients get the most life out of their wealth. We make the transition from work life to financial independence a bit easier. Our clients don’t struggle with running out of the money. It’s quite the opposite. They run the risk of getting to later ages and looking back with regret. We help make sure that doesn’t happen. We have a proven process that helps put the important things into perspective. And we help our clients spend money. They will run out of time before they run out of money. Most advisors just want to talk about money. They try and set themselves apart by investment strategy and thinking they have some unknown strategy that will beat the market. We don’t fight that battle. Our clients want would rather beat the market by reducing taxation on their planning and focus on outcomes and lifestyle.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find someone who you want to be like, not just at the surface. But in different categories of life. For me it was finance, faith, fun, fitness, family. The people that pour into me have those areas of life in a good place.
