Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracie Marshall.
Tracie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
First off, I started my cleaning business as a part time income in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2000. My oldest child, his dad and myself would go out and hand out flyers every weekend. At first it was slow, but then the business started to pick up. I had about 5- 10 clients that I would have on a regular basis. I was excited and scared at the same time. Over the years I did really well.
In the year 2004, God blessed me with a beautiful daughter. Five years later in 2009, I had a little boy and graduated from Ivy Tech Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Human Services. I experienced a lot of ups and downs as well as many hurdles and roller coasters that I had to overcome. I stayed in Indiana for a few more years until I decided to leave Indiana and relocate to Peoria I1. I wanted a change and wanted to better myself and my kids. I was now a mother of three kids starting all over again.
Upon leaving Indiana I also left my dream of being my own boss behind. I struggled but I trusted God and kept pushing forward. I worked for a Retail Store in Il and was a full time active parent in my kids’ lives. Their father was involved in their lives as well and would visit all the time. After being there in Il for three years of going to school being a parent and taking care what was important, again I wanted/needed something better. I had a family meeting to see where we would go. I had a list of states to choose from. My kids and their dad all had a chance to voice their opinion. My daughter wanted to go to New York, my oldest son said Texas or Atlanta, their dad was against Texas, he said it was too far. He still lives in Indiana. The winner was Atlanta which leads us to now…2013 we made the long move.
Moving ahead in 2015, I officially became a licensed Cleaning Business. I worked a job while fulfilling my dreams. It has been a lot of hard work, patience, perseverance, trusting God and the process that he has for me and my family. We have had a lot of falls and bruises along the way. Some days are up and some days are down, but I still put myself out there to get more clients and build my business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No! Networking, money, and getting people to trust you and your business. How to compete with other companies that are already established.
