Meet Trailblazer Ariel DeAngelo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel DeAngelo.

Ariel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always say, hairstyling found me before I found it.

I was a punky little 20 years old from Delaware with no direction when I decided to enroll in cosmetology school. I had aspirations of doing something creative, and I knew how much hairdressing had to offer. I had worked in a salon for two years and couldn’t get enough. I looked up to the beautiful stylists that I assisted for.

I enrolled in 2007 and I haven’t looked back.

Hair styling has given me the option to travel and live in such places as Philadelphia, Austin, and Atlanta. I’ve worked with and met some amazing fellow stylists along the way. Most recently, I have moved back to Atlanta where I work with some amazing people at Commoner Salon.

Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t say that my career has been entirely smooth, but I have definitely worked my butt off to be where I am. Over the past 11 years, I’ve learned more than anything. To love the HUSTLE. Like I said before, I moved a lot and traveled and every time I did that I started over. It was 100% worth it though!

I did, however, have a goal every single time I started over. I made sure I rebuilt my clientele, continued my education, networked and really stuck to what made me happy behind the chair.

This industry is tough, but it’s also extremely rewarding. Hustle hard and the payoff can be incredible!

We’d love to hear more about Commoner Salon 💇‍♂️.
Commoner Salon is a little gem tucked away into Little 5 Points/Candler Park. Owner, Lauren Lorenzin has offered us an amazing place to call home. Lately we have been making an effort to do a lot more education and to inspire each other to grow more within our careers.

As for me, you can find me behind the chair at Commoner Salon  painting someone’s hair. I do a TON of hair color, especially balayage. My style tends to be “lived in” hair color that mimics the subtle sun-kissed highlights we typically got as children. I do occasionally play with bolder vivid colors, and I love the variety!I also do a lot of hair cutting and lately, I have been expanding my razor cutting techniques on willing clients. I would say that hair color is my passion but cutting is a close runner up along with a great style.

As someone who is newly building her brand, I am most proud of how far I have come in the short amount of time I have been back in Atlanta. I have an amazing clientele that I get to do beautiful hair on, a husband who supports me in whatever I do, and a working family that I can always bounce ideas off of.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My mom was and still is a very creative, magical person. She never taught me to fit into a mold and I think that’s what drew me to hair styling. It lends itself to being the perfect mix of craft, creativity, and functionality to live in today’s world. I knew I needed something I could make my own and because I had my mother backing me, I went for it. So, as cheesy as that sounds, my mom really influenced me to do whatever makes me happy and think outside of the box. Thanks mom! 🙂
