Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Frayer.
Liz, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1995 with a degree in Romance Languages. After working for the Olympics for a year, I realized that there wasn’t much of a need for a French and Italian speaker on an ongoing basis. I accepted a job as a temp to a permanent employee in an insurance agency. I didn’t plan for it to be my career, but I found myself fairly good at customer service and analyzing health care costs. Over the years, I held every job in the agency and became the leader of our division in 2006.
After ACA passed, my owner at the time was more interested in focusing more on the personal planning side of the insurance business. I bought the business from him in 2013. Since then, it’s been like being on a rocket ship. We’ve grown tremendously, all due to the significant efforts and talent of our team.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s not been a smooth road, but it’s been very rewarding. When I first bought the company, the whole benefits industry was in flux due to healthcare reform. There was a lot of anxiety around making sure we were the most educated and using that as an advantage. We chose to ride the change instead of getting overrun by it.
For me, I’ve ended up in an industry where I would have never placed myself. My best advice is to take every opportunity and make the most of it. You won’t ever regret giving something your all, but if you don’t give something your all, you’ll never know what success you may have had.
We’d love to hear more about Intrepid.
We help small to midsize employers plan, design and communicate their benefit plans. After the benefits package is implemented, we help their employees navigate the benefits program. We pride ourselves on being proactive in the process and being an extension of our client’s HR department. Our goal is for employees to feel like they are calling a trusted resource instead of an 800 number. We want to be known for being a true partner for our clients and their employees.
We have been ranked as the best place to work by the Atlanta Business Chronicle for the past 8 years. We work hard to keep our team culture fun, engaging, and meaningful. We are an all female team in a typically male-dominated industry so we intentionally seek out creative ways to be different to provide more value to our clients.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe you can learn something from anyone and everyone. I’ve had fantastic mentors in my career. I’ve also had peers who have helped me just as much. My goal is to be a lifelong learner, always looking for opportunities to learn. I am not at all perfect, but I typically don’t make the same mistake twice.
