Today we’d like to introduce you to Ulesa Tabron.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ulesa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My curiosity for nails started in high school. I would polish my friend’s nails at lunch. I got into the nail industry because I was going to drop out of college my senior year. I knew my family was going to give me the third degree about dropping out with one semester left. So, I started preparing myself with the question, “What are you going to do now”? I enrolled in nail school in July of 2016 and completed the required 600 hours in November that year. I received my certification in 2017. I started making press on nails about a year ago (2019). My best friend Natalie, who braids hair, would wear press-on nails because it allowed her to change her nails easily between clients. She mentioned to me that I should make my own because the accent nail in the set would never fit her nails and she wanted a custom experience.
In 2018 I was working in a nail shop in Berkeley CA were one of my co-workers actually made press on nails and she was making a pretty decent living from it. In 2019 my boyfriend and I went to Judy Dropping Knowledge (a business seminar) where I heard Jesseca Dupart say “if you’re in the service industry you need a product to work for you.” Everything clicked when my boyfriend said, ” why don’t you sell nails? You have most of the supplies already. Shortly after the seminar, I started making press on sets and wearing them myself to ensure quality. I posted a boomerang on Instagram wearing pink glitter nails and the company took off from there.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely has not been smooth. One of the struggles has been confidence. You’ll have a customer complain about pricing and it defeats your spirits a little bit. But then I think to myself do they call Sally Hansen and haggle prices with her.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ulie Does It – what should we know?
Ulie Does It is a Luxury Press-on Nail Boutique and Nail Studio. I also offer nail services manicures and pedicures. What I’m most proud of as a company is that my nails have been worn by a model Alicia Meyers. She wore my masked bandit set on the cover of Picton Magazine and she was also featured in Vogue Italia wearing my Ice me outset. When I perform nail services, I give my clients an experience. I educate them on proper self-removal also on sanitation procedures. I think that is what separates me from others.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Faith! What is for me is for me and shall not miss me.
