Meet Whitney McGee of Proverbs Clothing Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney McGee.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After a few years at NC State University, I decided that college was not where my heart was and left to pursue a career more suited to my natural talents. I relied on my faith to propel me into my next opportunity; not realizing my faith would also serve as the catalyst for Proverbs Clothing Company, a faith-based apparel company started in 2012. With Proverbs thriving and gaining traction, I invested in screen-printing equipment and began printing t-shirts. Though I was happy about the local success, I felt my brand should be introduced to a larger market. I then sought out vending opportunities throughout NC and Georgia, by facilitating pop-up shops, attending special events, and shopping mall vending opportunities. The latter opportunity has been so successful, that General Managers have reached out to discuss incorporating Proverbs as a permanent fixture in their retail communities. Today, I continue to be the only employee of Proverbs, continuing to pursue my passion while boldly walking the path God has set before me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely been bumpy, BUT I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. The ebbs and flows of business has taught me so much. Maintaining and increasing revenue will always be something to be concerned about throughout your journey. Other than that, securing good staff and operating on minimum rest can be a constant struggle.

Proverbs Clothing Co – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Proverbs is a faith-based initiative dedicated to renewing minds and transforming lives through the products we sell.

When designing, I am motivated by our youth and popular culture. If I can relate the Bible to popular culture, that helps bridge the gap.

My vision for Proverbs was to inspire our youth, it has proven to inspire and touch many different cultural backgrounds as well as the elder community. Being able to exceed my goal of reach makes me proud!

I believe that God has blessed us all with gifts and visions unique to us. With that said the vision that I have will be different from others. That is what sets me apart from others and vice versa.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success equals happiness for me.

I believe there are multiple levels of success. For example, when I stepped out on faith to start Proverbs, quit my job, etc., those were small yet powerful feats for me.

When I achieve a sales goal every pop-up and monthly, that equals success.

As the journey continues, I will strive to celebrate every successful moment I encounter. It makes the ride that much better.
