Meet William Downs of Georgia State University and Day & Night Projects in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Downs.

William, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, that’s where everything started, I was a student at The Greenville County Fine Arts Center (High School). The Fine Arts Center provided me with all the tools that I needed to prepare for this long life as an Artist… I received a Multidisciplinary MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore and a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Atlanta College of Art and Design. I lived in Baltimore and New York for a long while before moving back to Atlanta.

I taught Foundation Drawing at the Maryland Institute College, Parsons The New School for Design and The Cooper Union. I am currently a Lecturer at Georgia State University and represented by Sandler Hudson Gallery. For the past few years, I’ve served on the board for Mint Gallery, a non-profit organization and a co-founder of an artist-run space called Day&Night Projects located on the south-west side of Atlanta.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Just making sure that I have a strong studio practice! Some find it hard but I do just fine with making it happen.

Please tell us about Artist, Art worker, Professor at Georgia State University, Co-Founder of Day & Night Projects.
I am a working artist currently based in Atlanta

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
To make sure that I make time to love all of my family and friends… they all are so important to my life and art world.
