Today we’d like to introduce you to William Flynn.
Thanks for sharing your story with us William. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always wanted to be my own boss. I was always tired of working for other people and not feeling appreciated. I wanted to become a person that people enjoyed working for. In 2009, I began to try to figure out what it was that I was going to do in order to be my own boss. I started a party planning company, but then in casual conversation during planning an event using Tents Tents Tents, it was mentioned that the company was for sale and it had someone interested in purchasing. When that fell through, the previous owner reached out to our family to let us know it was still for sale. We met with him a few times and worked out the details and then decided to purchase the company in January of 2010. Since 2010, we have grown from a 5,000 square foot to a 16,000 square foot space and increased our inventory and sales greatly. We have also gone from 3 employees to 6 employees.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is never a smooth road when you jump into a business that you have no experience in. I had never installed a tent before so that was a learning experience. We also decided to make this a family business when it was purchased. My wife quit her job to run the office while I did the deliveries. She brought the kids to work with her as she handled customers which was added stress, but it allowed us to be together as a family even during our busy season when we did not have a lot of time together at home. It is also difficult since it is a family business because that is all that we ever have to talk about. The rest of our close family gets tired of hearing about Tents around the dinner table.
Please tell us about Tents Tents Tents.
We are a small company doing big events! We strive to provide the best quality products and services. We specialize in wedding and corporate rentals and have everything that you would need for your event from floor to ceiling including carpeting, tables, chairs, linens, chandeliers, lighting, tents, etc. One of our customers recently told us that we have become their only tent provider because they know that we will show up when we are supposed to and even if something comes up, we will communicate any issues. It is amazing to hear that other companies are not able to let their customers know if they are running late or if they will not be able to meet a deadline.
The thing that we are most proud of as a company is our relationships that we have developed with people over the years. Some of our repeat customers over the years have become friends and that has been so special to us.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a child, we would spend the summers camping on the lake with my best friend at the time. There would be swimming and bike riding and a fun time each and every trip.
