Today we’d like to introduce you to Ziza McMillan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
If you had asked me a few years ago if I thought I would be strong enough to write this, my answer would have been ABSOLUTELY NOT! Why? Because I would have never admitted out loud that I suffered from the major depressive disorder. For many years the ebbs and flows of depression plagued my life and I effectively mismanaged it. It wasn’t until a series of events in 2010 and 2011 shattered my world and I hit rock bottom.
In October 2010 my mother’s baby sister passed away from cancer, in November 2010, my husband and I miscarried our only daughter in the second trimester of our pregnancy, and if that wasn’t enough, on December 9, 2010, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only to lose that battle a short four months later. My life spiraled downward and on many occasions, I contemplated suicide. My grief was all consuming and I did not know how I was going to live in this world without my mother. It was a STRUGGLE!
Seven years later I have figured out how to effectively manage my depression. I am a junior board member with American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, I am a member of NAMI GA, I am a motivational speaker and author of “Seven: Purposeful Healing and New Beginnings” which tells the story of my journey with grief and depression. It is my purpose and mission to let everyone know that there are hope and purpose in their pain.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely Not! I had to fight for my entire being, I had a beautiful family, a great career, and a great life, but I was consumed with grief to the point where I did not want to live. I was in the middle of the biggest storm of my life and I was suffering, my family was suffering. One day I had to decide that I wanted to live and not die. I had to seek help from a therapist and make a plan to manage my mental health.
