Today we’d like to introduce you to David Scheinberg.
Hi David, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is David, but most people call me Shiney. My company is Shiney Media Group, a Media Production company based in Los Angeles at first but now expanded here to Atlanta. I am CEO and one of two founding partners. I’ve been producing stories in many forms and formats throughout my career – about a quarter century now – most often taking the form of astonishing brand spectacles for which I am extremely proud. I believe what I do is entertainment first and foremost, but packaged beautifully by marketing, advertising, media and events.
Interestingly enough, my story began in Sandy Springs, GA, born and raised. I attended Woodward Academy and graduated in 1997. That was the last time I lived in the Atlanta area… until last year.
I spent college undergrad at The University of Arizona in Tucson, followed by Film School in New York. After my student thesis film won Best Short at the San Francisco Film Festival, I began my career as a filmmaker and spent the early 2000’s splitting my time between NYC and Bangkok. I worked in Southeast Asia producing movies, music videos, and commercials.
Following the Tsunami disaster in 2005, I set my sights towards Los Angeles. Between moving from NY to LA, I made brief a stop in ATL and did some marketing work, but the big take-away was meeting my wife, Lindsay. Literally, I took her away with me to LA after just dating several months.
Some fun career facts:
1) I earned my first Experiential production gig when I moved to LA in 2006; a freelance producer position launching the Toyota Prius with an 18-month mobile exhibits tour. Seeing the audience physically interact with our creation was incredibly satisfying and changed the trajectory of my career.
2) I climbed the agency network ranks rather quickly and became a partner at my own Experiential marketing firm by age 32. We thrived and executed award-winning programs for the likes of Microsoft, FX Network, AMC, Sony, Sprint, AT&T, Puma, Boston Beer Co., Kroger, Amazon, to name a few of the hundreds.
3) I believe I am the premier expert and Producer of Airport Experiential Activations in Norh America. Too often agencies and brands contact airports only to be told “No”. I’m the guy whose name and number you’ll get when you’re ready to hear “Yes”.
4) When I work with people, I am almost always developing lifelong friendships. That must be among the greatest results of my career.
At the end of 2019 I sold out of the Agency I had run for 12 years and started Shiney Media Group with one of those partners. Then – BAM! – Pandemic. The wife and I retreated to Wyoming until it got too cold, then back to LA…. but somewhere under the Tetons the wife and I decided we’d finally try (in my 40’s) to procreate. In December 2022, our daughter Daphne joined us. We looked at our lives, saw that we were spending a lot of time at home rather than on the Sunset Strip, checked the value of our home, and decided we’d cash in on our California dream to raise our kid right in Georgia. With technological advancements in virtual meetings and Atlanta’s rich production resources, it was a no-brainer to expand Shiney Media to the Southeast and let my business partner run the office in LA.
So here we came last year, bought a home in Roswell that we plan to stay in for at least the next two decades. Almost as soon as we moved in, we got pregnant with our daughter Scarlett; she joined us on March 7th. I’m still producing big shows nationwide, but it’s fun to call Georgia home again after about 30 years. Obviously treating us very well so far.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I won’t go on too much about adversity, but it would be a lie to say that’s it’s always smooth sailing. One thing I do very well is maintain composure, and I deal with difficult people incredibly well. I’ve had two major tragedies sideline my career for brief moments, but with each incident came a better gift from life. The first was the Tsunami in December 2004; that halted my production career in Thailand, but also sent me to LA and I’d otherwise not have met my wife either. The second tragedy, I suppose, was COVID, but that only paused my career and gave me time to evaluate my life; this resulted in two beautiful daughters and relocation to Atlanta. Not much to complain about!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think I may have answered this in my first response, but I am a Media Producer / Executive Producer with a long list of films, commercials, events, conferences and festivals under my belt. One thing I’m best known for is Airport Marketing – specifically Live Event activations – inside of airport terminals. My creativity and patience under pressure make for a massive victory for my clients. I enjoy people, and based on my career I believe that they tend to enjoy me too. My customer service is top-notch and I know how to please. Better yet, I know how to identify those qualities in others and build exceptional teams with that foundation first. I’m also great for a lot of laughs.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I like to digest fiction in all forms/media, but sometimes also to kickstart my own creativity. In recent years I’ve been really into Donald Glover’s output, to name another ATLien.
