Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Kenya.
Hi Justin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has been deeply rooted into my life for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest childhood memories are just running around the house, completely carefree, singing at the top of my lungs. Growing up, my primary inspiration was my mother, who is a lifelong singer. Hearing her voice filled our home, and her talent heavily influenced me to eventually pursue my own path in music. For years, she begged me to join our local church choir, but back then, my focus was entirely on school and competitive sports.
As I got older, though, singing naturally took over and became an inseparable part of my everyday life. I found myself instinctively humming and singing along to every single song on the radio. It got to the point where my teachers in school would actually call my parents to complain about me humming during class. Looking back, I couldn’t help it—I was just getting in trouble for doing what I loved. The music had to find a way out.
The definitive turning point came when I was 22. I was driving around the city of Atlanta all day doing DoorDash, trying to find my true calling. One random afternoon, I heard Justin Timberlake on the radio and felt an immediate, powerful wave of inspiration—which always felt a bit like destiny, considering we share the same first name. Right after that, I went home, hooked up some old music equipment a friend had given me, and began deep-diving into YouTube tutorials to learn the actual mechanics and skills required to be a professional artist.
After several months of locked-in practice at home and making covers of my favorite songs, I knew where my future belonged. I made the bold decision to drop out of college and dedicate my life entirely to my artistry. That leap of faith led to the official launch of my career on Apple Music with my debut single, ‘Left On Read’—a track inspired by the very relatable experience of trying to take a girl out, only to get completely ghosted.
Today, at 23 years old, I have grown my digital platform to over 100,000 fans worldwide by merging my music with a highly curated sense of style and fashion. I give all the glory to God for my journey. While I was always a natural-born singer, talent only gets you to the starting line. I wouldn’t be where I am today without immense hard work and relentless dedication. I made a strict promise to myself to practice my vocals for three hours every single day until I am a global superstar. I’ve stayed completely consistent on that grind, and that is exactly where I stand today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, and the biggest obstacle I face isn’t internal—it’s the current state of the music industry itself. Today, the game is incredibly over-saturated. Because technology makes it so easy to record and distribute music, a lot of people treat making music as a casual hobby rather than a serious profession.
That saturation creates a real challenge for dedicated, highly talented artists who are trying to stand out. When the market is constantly flooded with low-effort content, listeners naturally develop a layer of skepticism. People almost always expect independent music to lack quality because they’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of hobbyists out there. It makes it harder to get a listener to pause, clear their mind of that bias, and give a true, dedicated artist a fair chance at success.
My way of overcoming this challenge is doubling down on quality, discipline, and my visual presentation. I refuse to blend into the background or release anything less than excellent. By treating my artistry like an elite profession—honing my vocals daily and keeping my brand completely polished—I can cut through the noise and prove to listeners from the very first note that this isn’t a hobby for me; it’s my calling.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an R&B artist and content creator specializing in smooth, high-energy vocal performances and a heavily curated visual aesthetic. Musically, my sound taps into a classic, melodic R&B vibe, giving listeners a nostalgic yet fresh feeling similar to artists like Chris Brown, Jacquees, and Lloyd. I’ve built a strong reputation on social media for delivering some of the highest-quality R&B vocal covers on Instagram, putting my own unique spin on tracks by powerhouse artists such as Usher, Miguel, Chris Brown, and Daniel Caesar.
What completely sets me apart from others in my generation, however, is my distinct fashion sense and style. My dedication to tailoring and high-end aesthetics goes way back. In high school, I became legendary for wearing a fresh, fly suit to class every single day from 9th grade all the way through graduation. That consistency earned me the ‘Best Dressed’ superlative in my yearbook, and winning that title inspired me to carry that exact commitment to sharp fashion into my professional artistry today.
I believe that true R&B isn’t just about what you hear; it’s a complete audiovisual experience. I am most proud of my ability to blend vocal discipline with a polished, luxury look. While many independent artists focus solely on the music, I specialize in delivering the entire package—fusing undeniable vocal talent with a signature, unforgettable style that demands attention the moment I walk into a room.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
While I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have different mentors reach out over the years to offer encouragement and empowerment, the real credit for my foundation belongs to my mother and my fans.
My mom has been my ultimate cheerleader and blueprint. Hearing her sing around the house since I was a little boy instilled the music in me, and her endless belief in my talent gave me the confidence to take the leap and go all-in on my career. She is the backbone of my journey.
Alongside her, my global community of fans deserves immense credit. Building a platform of over 100,000 supporters isn’t just a metric to me; it’s a family. Every time they stream my music, share my covers, or comment on my fashion drops, they fuel my grind. Knowing that my music resonates with people worldwide keeps me inspired to stay disciplined and keep pushing forward toward that global stage. I do this for them.
