Rising Stars: Meet Nadine Duncan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadine Duncan. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Nadine Duncan

The Traveling Black Women Network was founded by Nadine C. Duncan, starting with the publication of her book, “Diary of a Traveling Black Woman: A Guide to International Travel.” This book aimed to fill a significant gap in the travel industry by addressing the unique experiences, challenges, and joys of international travel from the perspective of a Black woman.

Nadine’s passion for travel and her commitment to empowering Black women through shared experiences and knowledge were the driving forces behind the project.

Following the publication of her book, Nadine leveraged the momentum and interest it generated to build a community around the concept of Traveling Black Women. She created a platform that extended beyond the book, utilizing blogs, social media channels, and various digital outlets to share travel tips, destination guides, and personal stories, and to celebrate the diversity of Black women travelers.

As the community grew, so did the scope of the Traveling Black Women Network. It began to offer travel meetups, group trips, workshops, and an online group specifically designed to meet the needs and interests of Black women travelers. Nadine’s vision was to not only provide information and inspiration but also to foster a supportive network where Black women could share their travel experiences in a safe and welcoming environment.

Today, under Nadine C. Duncan’s leadership, the Traveling Black Women Network has become a significant force in the travel industry, advocating for greater diversity, inclusivity, and representation. Through partnerships with travel brands, tourism boards, and other stakeholders.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Here were some of our struggles:

1. Visibility and Representation: One of the initial challenges was gaining visibility in a saturated travel market where Black women’s voices and experiences were significantly underrepresented.

2. Building Community Trust: Establishing a trusted community around Traveling Black Women meant consistently providing valuable, relatable, and authentic content and experiences. Building this trust took time, especially in the early stages when the network was still growing and establishing its identity.

3. Funding and Resources: Like many passion-driven projects, finding the funding and resources to grow and sustain the network was a significant challenge. This included financing for events, group trips, and the development of online content and resources for the community.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart from others is my deep commitment to empowering Black women through the lens of travel, combined with my firsthand experience and understanding of the unique challenges we face. I’ve not only authored “Diary of a Traveling Black Woman: A Guide to International Travel” but also built the Traveling Black Women Network from the ground up, focusing on the intersection of race, gender, and travel in a way few others have.

My work is distinguished by a genuine passion for creating a supportive community and safe spaces where Black women can share their travel experiences, learn from each other, and explore the world with confidence. I prioritize authentic representation and inclusivity, advocating for the needs and interests of Black women in spaces where we have historically been overlooked.

My approach is holistic, covering not just the joy and excitement of travel but also addressing safety, discrimination, and accessibility issues. This comprehensive perspective, combined with a relentless drive to foster change in the travel industry, positions me as a unique voice and leader in this space.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Those summers spent in Trinidad, immersed in the joy of building tents with my cousin Rudi, stand out as some of the most cherished periods of my childhood. Exploring the backyard of my uncle’s house while eating Julie mangos from their mango tree is also one of my favorite memories.
