Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky Meeks
Hi Sky, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started modeling in 2018. I did it for a couple of years, but it wasn’t for me. I rarely felt comfortable and always found myself comparing myself to others. Even though modeling isn’t for me, I know a lot of people who have gotten a ton of great opportunities through modeling, and I’m so proud of them! But, throughout my experience I became more interested in the behind the scenes part of shoots. I wanted to be able to create and control my photos while also telling a story through them. I picked up photography in the summer of 2023 and have been loving it ever since! I feel like this past year I’ve been able to expand and grow. I now feel like I found what I was meant to do and it has really been a confidence booster. Instead of comparing, i’m inspired by my fellow photographers and love seeing how they take things to the next level.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ive had to deal with a lot of male photographers not taking me seriously and/or diminishing my work which always bugged me. I had a lot of people tell me i wasn’t going to go far with my work. But instead of letting that make me insecure, I put in the work to grow and teach myself. I spent hours watching lighting videos and learning different software. I would color grade the same photos differently over and over again to visually see what all I could do with my photos. Every time I felt myself feeling lost, I pushed myself harder and its shown in the opportunities I’ve been given. Overall, Its been enlightening, kinda bumpy but a beautiful ride.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I mainly focus on fashion editorial work but have been open to getting into concert photography as well. Theres so much to learn and I’m always open to expanding. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in only a year and am just looking forward to continuing to grow! I don’t know what really sets me a part. I think that each creative has their own thing so theres nothing to be set apart from. I think a lot of people have really praised my colors and tones but I just take the photo based off of what captures my mind visually in the moment!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about our city is all the opportunities it gives you to meet so many people from different backgrounds. Ive met the most kind heart, chill people that I would not have met back home on Alabama. Moving here really helped me express myself. What I like least would be people who try to get to know you because they want something from you, I’ve had a lot of people try to do that with me but I am the kind of person who really values friendship over business.
