Robyn Groenewald shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Robyn, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Two funny moments from the last couple of weeks stand out. The first was a customer who ordered a cupcake bouquet but asked me to make it look like a table arrangement rather than a bouquet of flowers, so that she could place it on the table during her dinner party like an arrangement of flowers. One of her guests asked if they could smell the flowers. Her response, “you certainly can. but it’s likely they will smell like cupcakes”.
The second was a husband sent to pickup cupcakes for his daughters first birthday party, not aware his wife had ordered a very large (30 cupcake) bouquet. So I answered the door and haded him this very large bouquet of buttercream flowers, he looked at me a little unsure and said “cupcakes?” I smiled and nodded and said “yes, cupcakes”. He had me chuckling for the rest of the day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi I’m Robyn, I run a custom bakery from my home in the shady forests of East Cobb. I specialize in buttercream flowers that I place on either cakes or cupcakes. I take orders for any special occasions, but most of the orders I receive are for baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays and weddings. My focus is always to have my bakes taste as good as they look, I’m constantly striving to make my buttercream flowers look as realistic as possible. I’m also an eco warrior, passionate about the environment and constantly conscious about what packaging I use.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I was 11 my best friend and I ran a business called Clowning Around, we both dressed as clowns and hosted children’s birthday parties. We would buy prizes and play games with the kids and basically keep the kids entertained for the duration of the party. I loved the feeling of bringing joy to people, I loved being in charge and keeping the kids engaged and I loved organizing and planning for the parties. My mom was a big supporter of my ideas as she had to take us to buy the prizes and then take us to the parties, she believed in us and encouraged entrepreneurship. I also learnt about costing and making a profit, not that we made much money, but it was a great learning experience.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to stop worrying about other people’s perception. of me and focus on what makes me happy, what I really want to do. I feel like a lot of the choices I made when I was younger I made to prove something to others, rather than because it’s what I really wanted to do. Now I just need to be carful to not repeat those mistakes.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I’m sure my closest friends would tell you, my family is most important to me. All of the choices I make now are to ensure my children and my husband are being taken care of. I also make sure that I fill my own gas tank too (I take time to workout, meditate and read to relax). I also make time for my friends, this can be tricky in this stage of life (kids in sports, not yet driving), but I feel it’s really important to stay connected and so I really make an effort for my friends.
I’m passionate about making the world a better place, we can all do better and. I believe it starts with me. If I’m not doing my part I can’t blame anyone else, so I’m always trying to do better.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop worrying about money and focus on having fun and traveling more. I’d want to spend as much time with my family and friends as possible. I’d drop the worry about saving for the future.
