We recently had the chance to connect with Audra Nicole and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Audra, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
An average day dedicated to my creative work often involves collaborating with my freelance book cover artists or short film poster designers. Sometimes I’m editing content for YouTube or TikTok, or coordinating with my book editor and talent manager. It may also include revising a book manuscript or script draft, submitting projects to film festivals and grant opportunities, or supporting fellow creatives with their artistic projects.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is “Audra Nicole” Davison, an author and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia. I graduated from Spelman College in 2022, where I created Green, a documentary about Black Americans raised in suburbia, which was an Official Selection at the 2024 Tokyo International Short Film Festival.
While at Spelman, I also received a grant from META and the Blackhouse Foundation to produce my animated short film, The Hale Academy, inspired by my research on the Kingdom of Kongo and secret societies in Sierra Leone. Alongside the film, I self-published the ebook The Hale Academy: A Trip to the Kalunga. Both explore Africana spirituality through the lens of a magical HBCU. The book and film are available on Amazon Prime Video and Amazon. Although the film will soon be available for streaming through Black Public Media .
In 2024, I earned my MFA in Narrative Media Writing from the University of Georgia, where I wrote and directed Chronically Online, a short film about the socio-economic impacts of social media on creatives. The film has screened at six festivals, earned five awards, and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Most recently I’ve published a middle grade novel entitled The Hale Academy: A Realm Unknown, available for purchase on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles. I currently work as a Graphics Coordinator at Next Phaze Media Group and am a Communications Specialist at Alight Solutions.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of the first moments I realized I wanted to pursue a creative path was in fifth grade, when I wrote and directed a play for my class after learning about playwriting. My classmates all agreed to participate, and my dad even came to record the performance on his camcorder. Seeing my work come to life on stage (or in the front of the classroom) was an incredible experience that solidified my passion for storytelling.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The creative industry can be challenging, and since graduating college, I’ve often found myself questioning whether to continue pursuing it. However, my passion for creating always brings me back. It feels like an innate drive within me, something I’m simply meant to do.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
If you asked my friends and family, they’d tell you that authentic storytelling is deeply important to me. I’m drawn to any form of art that carries heart, a personal message, or a meaningful social theme.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m working on a project that resonates with me, one that allows me to express myself authentically and communicate my perspective with honesty and clarity.
