Story & Lesson Highlights with DJ Ms. Eclectic of Atlanta

We recently had the chance to connect with DJ Ms. Eclectic and have shared our conversation below.

DJ, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Waking up with Music, Because what’s a day without music as a DJ. I have to start out with Gospel/Inspirational Music to get the day going! Prayer and then on to answering emails, calls and texts and prepping to-do lists. Preparation starts the day because being strategic is the key from interview questions for my show, Good Vibes with Ms. Eclectic, to coordinations with publicists, to keeping my pulse on what’s new and trending, and news stories for the midday show, where I’m the executive producer on Audacy Atlanta WAOK. Then getting into this Atlanta Traffic where a 30 minute drive becomes an hour, you almost get cut off and you sit in traffic for no apparent reason.

Once I arrive at the station, it’s nonstop: producing content, editing, more emails, and brainstorming creative ideas for both the show and my personal brand. My afternoons are a mix of meetings, content creation, and sometimes a quick nap — because once you reach a certain age, naps become not only necessary but essential.

Evenings and Weekends often take me to media events whether red carpet, experiences or DJing, where I capture coverage, connect with people, and gather inspiration. And then, of course, comes more editing — because in this business, the story is always in the details.

It’s a full, fast-paced cycle, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every day is a chance to create, inspire, and share — and tomorrow, I’ll wake up and do it all over again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Shantelle Thompson, better known as DJ Ms. Eclectic — a Texas native, graduate of Prairie View A&M University who has built a career by refusing to be boxed into one lane but using the best of all of elements, standing in the true definition of “Eclectic”. My brand is rooted in creating experiences that are authentic, energetic, and inspiring, whether I’m on-air hosting Good Vibes with Ms. Eclectic, DJing live, or producing content behind the scenes.

What makes my work unique is the eclectic blend of creativity I bring to everything I do. I’m able to fuse my corporate background and incorporate my creative nature. I’ve been blessed to make history as the first woman to win DJ of the Year at The Spin Awards and I’m proud to be the Executive Producer of the #1 midday show, On Point with Juandolyn Stokes, on Audacy Atlanta WAOK where we just won two 2025 Gabby Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting! I’ve produced award shows, been apart of a ground-breaking Gospel Group as a lyricist (F.R.E.E.) and continue to build platforms that celebrate and uplift voices in music, media, and culture.

Right now, I’m focused on expanding my personal brand, growing my show Good Vibes with Ms. Eclectic, and creating new opportunities to inspire young women to embrace their full creative fabric. For me, it’s never just about entertainment — it’s about impact, representation, and making sure people feel seen and heard.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My Mother, she’s a retired educator. I watched her work as a Music Educator and I also saw her play for church every Sunday Morning, To this day, she is the Minister of Music at my home church in TX, St. Luke Baptist Church. I saw her work ethic, how she showed up, how she was a woman of integrity and faith and how she was always poised and well-dressed.

I try to show up the same way as a Radio Host, DJ, Executive Producer and just in everyday life.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Other people’s opinions and projections. It’s so liberating to get to a point where you truly do not seek validation from others. It’s still a journey but Im getting closer to freedom!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Sometimes the smartest person ends up with the heaviest load. Often, those who are gifted with knowledge and insight pour so much of themselves into others that they forget to channel that same brilliance back into their own lives. True wisdom is finding balance — serving others without losing yourself in the process.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
“Yesish”, although to be transparent it is tough and “everything” means all the time! It’s natural to want to progress and want to receive recognition but the Bible says “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people”
