Nakia Creel shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Nakia, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that brings me joy is spending time with my immediate family, my children, and my grandchildren. The time that I spend with them, I now view as priceless, necessary, and important.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Nakia Creel, an author, a writer, and the owner and CEO of Creel Publishing. I love being able to dive into my creativity and express myself through my writing. But I thrive on my ability to cultivate and guide new talent. I created Creel Publishing to assist writers in every aspect of their creative journey. It is my mission to help and encourage; my clients and employees are my first priority. My ultimate goal is to provide them with tools that will make them successful.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
This is a layered question. When I was younger, my relationship with my father shaped me. He didn’t mince words, and he never sugarcoated the reality of a situation. He was very hands-on and instrumental in making sure we went into the world knowing we had to work hard, be honest, and be strong and resilient. My dad led by example; he showed me what I needed and deserved out of life. In my adult years, my influence has been my children; they breathe life into me and have been my biggest cheerleaders.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me resilience; it has taught me never to give up. Suffering has strengthened my relationship with God. It has also taught me self-reflection. Anything worth having is worth working for, and storms don’t always last, but they do build character. Suffering and failure prepare you for success; it’s all part of the learning process. In order to win you first need to learn to lose.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. The public version of me is a part of me, just not the only part of me. For the most part, I am the same all the time, but with family and friends, I can let my hair down a bit more.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am walking in my purpose; this is truly what I was born to do. If I were to do anything else, it would be dancing, and that is not something that I can do forever. My stories, poems, books, and publishing work are all part of my legacy. These are things that will live on forever.
