Story & Lesson Highlights with Yoshi Chipwood of Atlanta

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Yoshi Chipwood . Check out our conversation below.

Yoshi, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of building my relationship with God. Owning and managing a business isn’t for the weak. I remember when I took the risk of starting my journey as an entrepreneur things started off rough of course, I remember praying to God and as I did that life was getting better. Some where along the way I slowed down on talking to God and it gotten to I a point things got bad for me, I didn’t know what to do, not until friend told me “you need to surrender”. I did. Since then I’ve been isolated yet rebuilding my relationship.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi Everyone I’m “Yoshi”. I’m a custom woodworker here in Atlanta, I’ve been building since I was 6 yrs. I start my journey as an entrepreneur in 2016. I specialize in building custom closets, secret spaces, accent walls and much more. I’ve built for some of your most amazing people we all know and love growing up on tv and social media. I love to consider myself a builder do or Jesus; a simple man that was born and raised in Virginia. Since I’ve been here in Atlanta my brand as becoming one of the greats in custom wood working has its ups and downs but I’m constantly working on always becoming a better version of what it is I do. Building has become and will always be my purpose in life I feel until God says otherwise.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
As I began to think back before the time of me even being on this journey as an entrepreneur and actually taking it seriously. There was a client (I don’t recall the name) that came and prayed for me, telling me things I needed to hear especially during a rough patch in my life. Really speaking to me with tears, giving me the praises of the talent I possessed. From that moment I knew I had a calling.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No there wasn’t, however it’s been plenty times I have had to slow down. These days it’s so normal to go through difficulty in life, but it’s all apart of growth. The key for me is to always pray and hold on to faith because with that you would always pull through no matter what circumstances. It’s ok to slow down at times, just don’t stop moving forward. Imagine running effortlessly on an escalator that’s constantly going down while you’re running up, and life is throwing every obstacle at you; example issues with staying on top of a business and personal issues. As soon as you get stop because of all the obstacles coming at you; without moving you’ll go no where but down.. it’s ok to move slow just never give up on what your purpose is in life. Keep climbing up slowly but surely.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Great question, and a bold one. Like many crafts and industries, woodworking has its own myths, dogmas, and half-truths that get passed around, often unintentionally. For me one of the biggest lies I’ve heard is you need expensive tools to go good work. Growing up in this industry I’ve been lead to believe quality work requires premium tools from big name brands. The truth is while good tools help, many great woodworkers such as myself to produce incredible results with modest or vintage tools. Skill, technique, and understanding your material matter more than brand names.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
To speak briefly; YES! Absolutely all of my clients are great people and I’m extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to work with them. Regardless of their praises or not. I give myself the praise, and it’s no greater feeling. Being able to clap for myself has been truly a blessing.
