We recently had the chance to connect with Will Cummings Jr. and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: When was the last time you felt true joy?
My most recent moment of joy was working on set this past Sunday. Every opportunity to contribute to a production fills me with genuine happiness and being on set and doing what I’m passionate about is consistently a source of fulfillment.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Will, and I’m the co-founder of LW Cinema. LW Cinema is a production company dedicated to creating compelling content for filmmakers. I work as a gaffer and actor, and I’ve recently begun developing my first script. At LW Cinema, every project is rooted in storytelling; we’re driven by a passion for bringing creative visions to life.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
There are two individuals who recognized my potential long before I did was SSGT Jay Jenkins and Coach Mark McCall. In ninth grade, SSGT Jenkins encouraged me to remain in NJROTC when I considered leaving, and because of his guidance, I stayed committed throughout all four years of high school. Coach McCall believed in me from the moment I joined the wrestling team in tenth grade, despite my early struggles. His faith in me led to my appointment as team captain the following year—an honor I also held on the soccer team. Both saw the person I could become while I was just a class clown in school making all the jokes.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could offer my younger self a single piece of advice, it would be to remain resilient. A difficult moment is not the end of the story. Don’t allow negativity to shape your mindset or disrupt your path. And remember, those who criticize often do so from a place of personal struggle. They don’t hate you; they’re reacting to the reflection of who they aspire to be.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
The individual I admire most—not for his fame or influence, but for his character—is Muhammad Ali. I’ve spent time watching his documentaries to better understand the man behind the legend. His confidence was unmatched; he could speak boldly and back it up with action. Growing up, he was my role model—a symbol of resilience and self-belief. Ali never let public opinion define him. He stood firmly in his identity, unwavering and authentic. No one could change who Muhammad Ali was, and that unwavering spirit continues to inspire me. Will Smith portrayed Ali very well in the movie. One of my favorites.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I give every project my full commitment, not for recognition, but for personal fulfillment. Awards and financial success aren’t the driving forces behind my work as a filmmaker. What brings me peace is simply being able to create and be apart of meaningful productions. I value quality and authenticity over material gain. The hardware can stay on the shelf; my satisfaction comes from the craft itself and teaching along the way.
