Today we’d like to introduce you to BerryP.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My family roots stem from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I honestly didn’t know that until it was mentioned at my grandmother’s funeral. So after I heard that, I decided to do some digging. To my surprise, I found out a lot as it pertains to my grandparents. However… ugh, I was raised in Montgomery Al. Yea I know, the 334 lol, I had a good upbringing my mother was an amazing parent but she didn’t play no games though. I didn’t really have a relationship with my dad there wasn’t any bad blood he just wasn’t present as much as he should have been.
I think I first realized I wanted to be A Soul/RnB singer and an artist was when I was about eight years old And I started dragging my Mom to festivals, fairs, karaoke contests, and talent shows at school. I recorded my first professional EP when I was 13, but because I was in school, my mom wanted me to stay focus on my schooling. So the only time she’d let me work on music was during the weekends. My Manager at the time was (Queen Bee Maximum), who was also a radio personality, she wanted me to do music full time so during the week, she would sometimes convince my mom to let her put me in the studio and do radio interviews. It got to the point where I became so busy that I began lacking in school. So! My mom stopped me from making music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whew. It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’ve endured a lot of the years, at the age of 17, my mom passed with my dad later passing two months later. I stopped the music “completely” I started getting into a lot of trouble and I do mean ALOT. The final straw was when I caught a charge after that my moms best friend took me In. I decided I wanted to start my on my business, a cleaning service, which “Tan” helped me with. It took off. I was running my business while preparing to graduate school, focusing on my kids, my God mom and the family,my friends, my siblings, and my nieces and nephews. Even after I decided to get it right I ended up getting stabbed then shot . But I’d have to say my biggest challenge, Was being diagnosed with “Small Cell Metastatic Lung Cancer” so smooth wouldn’t be a word I’d use more like bumpy lol.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer, songwriter, music composer and hook god, lol. I call myself the hook god because I can come up with a nasty chorus. However, as it pertains to my work Ethic I’ve been signed to A Record Label before 2014-2016 to be exact..“Capella Ent Inc” might I add that I was signed to them with no music out at that time. I was signed to them simply because I was walking around Walmart singing and someone heard me .. but I digress, After signing with Capella Inc I released a five-song EP that charted in the top 20 on iTunes. I released my first single “Take Single” from my upcoming album September 19,2019 and it Peaked at #6 on AmazonMusic .The naysayers can check with Willie Liddell about those Facts! I have been featured in 2 magazines 1. RnB Lifestyle , 2. Black Performers I’ve also had an article written up about me by @philaye @philayespeakspod @flipfloptvshow and now you guys.
What I’m currently working/focused on now ? Me being a father first that’s foremost ..My album “7,4 El3v3n” is complete it’s in the mix and mastering process right now so that’ll be out really soon. I’m working on a new single, A new EP, my hair care product and beard oil. And, I hear there’s some talk of a reality show in the works nothing has been made concrete as of yet so fingers crossed. But, that’s what I have going on in this season ,this moment,in This time!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The advice I’d give about networking would be this.. in order to network you have to be present. What I mean by that is get out there and surround yourself with people who are in doing what your aspiring to do or already doing , just make sure the people you decide to surround yourself with has the same drive and determination as you whether it be Music, content creating, videographers, photographers etc.. just have the willingness and the drive to succeed.
Mentors? Just be sure the person you decide to give the title “MENTOR”to has your best interest at heart. BE SURE!
For Me. I speak with my pastor frequently, My God Dad, Willie and my friends encourage me daily so I’d have to say their my mentors I guess you can say lol.
