Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Davis.
Hi Bree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the early morning on October 24, 2018, while attempting to cope with the unforeseen deaths of friends and family and battling the PTSD of a failed domestically, emotionally, and financially abusive relationship to transitioning from a heinous corporate environment filled with racial discrimination and injustices leaving a trail of shattered dreams, I experienced suicidal ideations. After much encouragement to seek help, My assigned therapist convinced me to find a hobby to take on the journey of healing and rehabilitation and from there, the birth of candle making began. I found solace in curating a collection of candles that shined light in a time of darkness and named them after things that helped me cope, like The Serenity Prayer. This is where I finally found pure happiness.
Shortly after, I began leaving a dozen candles on the doorsteps of homeless shelters and women’s safe havens with anonymous notes of encouragement weekly. Two years later, when the world completely shut down and time froze, I began to experience the same emotions and darkness as I did in 2018. Inadvertently, I began making candles again to help navigate through the tough times of social isolation. I realized that the candles that I curated were more than any candle made with soy wax. They were a representation of healing and perseverance. I knew that someone else needed these candles, just like I did. With my combined dedication to educating and encouraging the acknowledgment of mental wellness challenges, I turned my compassion into action and inaugurated a company that was aimed to become the driving force behind the normalization of mental wellness stigmas. This is why 10% of the proceeds from The Rose Gold Collection are donated to a nonprofit focused on mental health awareness and advocacy each month.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like starting any new venture, the road will not always be smooth. I’ve been tempted to give up and focus on healing. Most importantly, because I am such a private person, the biggest challenge I’ve experienced was the convincing myself to open to up to “the world” and be vulnerable regardless if there would be judgment or disdain. However, I’ve always lived a life of transparency and I’ve learned that my story could be the saving grace for others. With that in mind, I choose to be vocal and truly advocate for mental well-being.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pure Nirvana & Co.?
Pure Nirvana & Co. is a female-led, black-owned candle company committed to redefining mental health and wellness for the socially conscious consumer. We stand before you, not as saviors or experts in the field of Mental Health or Licensed Therapists, but as allies to let you know that you are not alone and to help encourage you to heal. We have two (2) full collections with six (6) candles in each collection: The Signature Collection and The Rose Gold Collection. Through the purchases from the Rose Gold Collection, we donate 10% of the proceeds to our nonprofit partner of the month at the end of each month. Through our eco-friendly and environmentally neutral candles, we hope that you find peace, happiness and light in their aesthetically mesmerizing fragrances that illuminates an entire room in just one burn.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The characteristics that I feel are most important to the success of Pure Nirvana & Co. include being compassion, creative, having a vision, and open for change and evolving education. In order to be a successful entrepreneur and candle company, Pure Nirvana & Co. has to remain confident in our strategy and product. We know the contribution that we add to the world, we have to apply the strengths that we currently embody and allow others to share their recommendations on growth opportunity. Lastly, we believe that we have to focus on going deep and not wide. Diving deeply into our mission and goals and not spreading ourselves too wide that could potential cause burn-out.
