Today we’d like to introduce you to Dï Thomas.
Dï, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had an eye for art and seeing things from a different perspective ever since I was a child. I’ve carried that with me throughout my life in the way that I see objects and people. I used to film all of our band trips in high school and was known for always having a camcorder. I started out filming short films and taking photos of my friends about five years ago. I taught myself how to use a camera and found that I was a natural at it. Having experience in front of the camera made it easy for me to see everything inside and outside of the box. I spent a lot of time cultivating that sense. Which led me to writing my own scripts and filming them. I found that I really enjoyed creating my own stories and bringing them to life. I also found that I was aspired to inspire others through my work.
I went to Paris, France and did a photo project and filmed a web series based off of that aspiration. I am also an advocate for the Trans community and have created films (short film See Me and currently the sequel Seen is in post-production) to give a platform and voice to those who may feel like they don’t have one. With all of the filmmaking, directing was always a natural thing for me that I have taken this past couple of years to really focus on. My film project HUNGER really challenged me as a director and pushed me to a different level. Currently, I am directing an amazing series, Pretty for a Big Gurl (@prettyforabiggurl) written by Courtney Arlett (@courtneyarlett).
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
To be honest, I can’t complain. I won’t say that it has always been a smooth road, but I have been blessed to have people who genuinely believe in my vision and support me. If I encountered any obstacle(s) along my journey, it was because I got in the way of myself. Everything is a learning experience to get better and I’m taking it all in.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a filmmaker and freelance photographer. I do a lot of creative photoshoots. As I grow in this industry and find my own voice, the content that I put out and associate my brand with are positive and influential.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe luck has played a role in my life. I believe that I have been truly blessed with a gift that I choose to bless others with through my art.
