Meet Jasmine Clay of J Sapphire Accents in Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Clay.

Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started J Sapphire Accents in the middle of the quarantine of this year. The school semester had just ended for me, and it had been a very stressful one. I decided to find a hobby that would be something I could do just for me for self-care. I started researching things that I could make that were simple and easy, and I came upon potpourri sachets. I always loved aromatherapy items before this, so I started thinking about how simple it would be if I mixed different fragrances together and put them in little bags to sell. I started doing some research, found a reliable vendor, and started experimenting with different fragrances. It took me about three weeks of researching and experimenting before I realized that entrepreneurship was something that genuinely interested me, and I got really excited. I started to formally put together my business, including obtaining my LLC and other legal documents.

The premise of J Sapphire Accents is to bring a little bit of happiness into people’s everyday lives through what I call small “accents”, and they started off with just the fragrance sachets. Since summer, I’ve grown to include refresher mists, scented hand sanitizers, scented lotions, and customized water bottles, and I keep getting ideas to add to my product list. This is something that I never thought I would have an interest, let alone a passion for, but it is now my favorite thing to do that I’ve been able to turn into a second source of income. I’m hoping that as time goes on, I will be able to grow even more, and I cannot wait to see where this growth will take J Sapphire Accents.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The challenge of starting a business for me was that I had absolutely no experience, and neither did anyone in my immediate family. I honestly did not know where to start, and it easily became overwhelming at times. The most stressful part was figuring out what legal elements and documents were needed because I wanted to make sure that I did this the right way. I spent a lot of time waking up early to contact government departments like the IRS, the Georgia Tax Center, and other places just to get clarity on specific things because the internet would give mixed answers. This was something I had to overcome because as a perfectionist, I struggle if things do not always go perfectly. But starting a business is not easy, and there will always be challenges. So I think what I learned was that mistakes are bound to happen, and that is okay; we do the research, find out how it should be done, and then we stand up and try it again.

J Sapphire Accents – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
J Sapphire Accents specializes in what I like to call “useful accents for everyday living”. My accents include the scented fragrance sachets that can be placed inside of cars, closets, bathrooms, shoes, purses, and other small areas. These are one of my bestsellers. I also make scented hand sanitizers and lotions. My accents, especially the fragrance sachets, are something that I have not seen any other small businesses near me sell, and that is what I think sets me apart from others. I get a lot of questions about my sachets like how I thought about selling those, how I make them, etc. It’s something that is different yet useful, and that is the premise that I was aiming for when I decided to start making them. I’m most proud of the people around me who stayed supporting me through this because if it wasn’t for them, I would not have been able to start these businesses in this way or even this quickly. J Sapphire Accents has made a lot of growth in a short amount of time, and the support I’ve received is a significant contributing factor to that.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success comes from learning throughout the journey of finding your niche. I believe people are always searching for something, and a lot of times that is happiness. I believe once we find what we enjoy doing and what makes us feel fulfilled, even if it’s something simple, that we’ve found our niche. I believe it is more than just finding it, however. I think it is the lessons that we learn along the way; lessons such as determination, resilience, forgiveness, and not being afraid to try. I believe that once we learn how to enjoy the journey instead of rushing to reach whatever we see as the finish line, that we have been successful in a well-rounded way.
