Meet Jessica Wong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wong.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started playing music at a young age of four. I am a classically trained pianist for over 18 years and that had helped me develop a good sense of pitch and knowledge of theory. For college, I decided that I wanted to continue the musical journey. I was very interested in the process of music production and audio engineering so I decided to pursue that as my major at Berklee College of Music. During my time in college, I gained a lot of knowledge and experience with production and engineering. I also learned how to work with people efficiently. Outside of class, I did plenty of internships to gain real-world experience and make connections. After graduating from college, I moved to Atlanta to pursue my career. I am currently working on different projects with many talented people.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Things have been going well so far. I feel blessed working with so many amazing and talented people every day. It’s been a pleasure and I feel like everything is happening the way they’re supposed to. I’d say, however, that things did not go exactly as I have planned before I graduated from college. But that’s the nature of the music business. Things are always changing and they’re out of your control sometimes. But you have to be able to adapt to changes and keep things moving in the right direction. Know that you can thrive no matter where you work, and having the right people around you will go a very long way.

Another struggle that I have encountered is being a female in this music industry and being treated differently. It can be difficult being a female sometimes because there is not a lot of us in this industry. A lot of times when someone approaches you, they might not have the best intention in mind and that’s something we have to look out for all the time. However, you can flip it around and make that your advantage. As long as you are good at what you do and you can keep things professional, there are so many opportunities out there for you. People appreciate having a dope female on their team because it is such a rarity.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a music producer/audio engineer. I work with a lot of different artists and songwriters at the studio. I produce for them as well as recording and mixing. I do a lot of vocal production such as vocal tuning as well. What sets me apart from others is my unique cultural background. As someone with a Chinese cultural background, I can bring in new and exciting dynamics into the music scene with new sounds and perspectives. I am currently creating my sound in terms of production that combines urban music like hip-hop/trap/R&B with sounds from my culture. I want to promote and share my culture with everybody and make it the next best thing.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, to be successful is to have an everlasting impact on the world. I want my music to change how people view Asian culture and have a wider perspective on it. I want people to see a whole new side of Asian culture that they have never seen before and appreciate it.
