Meet Klyffe Louis, Jordan McCrear and Kendall Berry of The Qymists

Today we’d like to introduce you to Klyffe Louis, Jordan McCrear and Kendall Berry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We’ve been friends since high school and independently started making beats as respective hobbies. Jordan and Kendall formed The Qymists as a production duo in the summer of 2014, with Klyffe coming on board in the fall of 2015. We maintained our casual relationship with music production for some time after that.

Gradually we improved in skill, took advice and feedback from peers and grew in passion for our craft, taking up the mantle of producers for hire in 2018. In the spring of 2019, we became an official business entity, later taking up recording for artists and audio engineering.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our path to where we are today was relatively smooth, if gradual, save for the struggle and confusion that comes with starting a business from nothing with no experience and limited prior knowledge. Our main hurdle was expanding our online presence to reach new ears.

The Qymists – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Qymists, LLC is a music production and audio engineering group with strong roots in the music we enjoyed growing up, particularly Southern Hip Hop. A point of pride is our unique sound brought about by the interplay of our very different individual production styles and our catalog and client base has expanded to include R&B, Afrobeat, Dancehall, Pop, 8-bit gaming music and multiple sub-genres of EDM, as well of course as more sub-genres of Hip Hop.

We are also very proud of our ability to adapt quickly and efficiently to the particular needs of our clients without losing our signature sound, an ability we feel (and are often told) sets us apart from the run-of-the-mill beatmaker or audio engineer.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our industry is a living, breathing hotbed of creativity and artistic expression that is hard to predict in any meaningful way, but that has always existed and always will in some capacity. With the massive democratization of art in general and music in particular in the age of the ubiquitous internet, we think that the music industry will continue its trend of splintering into tighter niches that interact and borrow from each other, flourishing into a mosaic that will put the current diversity of music to shame. Already saturated and very competitive, we expect that the industry will only become more so in the coming years.
