Levonne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
SophistiTwerk initially came from my friend’s requests that I teach them how to “twerk.” Me being raised in a denomination of Christianity where dancing, among many other things, was considered “sin,” created an imbalance of spiritual and personal fulfillment for many so I struggled with fulfilling the request. However, I have always gone against the grain, so I began to play with the idea.
I saw the need for my church friends and professional colleagues to have this twerk experience outside of the club atmosphere. As a professional, SophistiTwerk has emerged as a safe haven for fun. As a Zumba instructor, I thought it would be perfect to merge this twerk experience into my fitness world-and that’s just what I did! As I’ve grown in my personal, spiritual journey, I have decided there IS room for dance: SophistiTwerk .
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a new business is never easy. However, the greatest challenge was being brave enough to even voice my idea of SophistiTwerk fitness classes to close friends and family. Yet, after a conversation with two of my entrepreneurial friends (who have long inspired me), I finally opened up, shared the birth of SophistiTwerk and guess what… they immediately jumped in to bring it to life. From logo design to finalizing the name-SophistiTwerk , creating flyers, and marketing verbiage, everyone has shown great support–even my MOST conservative mother!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SophistiTwerk Fitness – what should we know?
SophistiTwerk is a fun, workshop-style, cardio dance class. You will learn choreography that you’ll be able to take home, enjoy, and relive the experience. SophistiTwerk promotes:
1. Fun Fitness.
2. Building Body confidence.
3. Rekindling Romantic Relationships.
This class is for novice to professional dancers.
Unlike other new twerk classes, SophistiTwerk is alcohol and heel-free experience. The focus is on fitness.
I’m most proud that I get to do SophistiTwerk with my son Laron of @LaronBest, a budding world-renowned choreographer. He helps with choreography and keeps my music selections on par with pop culture.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The question I get asked almost daily is, “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO SIT DOWN?” My drive is hands-down the strongest characteristic that is important to my success with SophistiTwerk . From SophistiTwerk to Zumba to earning my master’s in education, my drive for personal excellence is the undercurrent for my success.
