Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlette Robinson.
Marlette, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a NAIL TECH. I’ve been licensed since 2000 a graduate from Atlanta Area Technical College in Atlanta Ga. Well, the inspiration to publish a magazine of this creativity came about when I was looking around and saw magazines and even featured in the Hair magazine here out of Atlanta. Hair, where’s the Nail industry. It was a few, but NOTHING ONLY FOR NAIL TECHS, and in the South. But the foundation and reason behind NAIL DESIGN 101 MAGAZINE is being an outlet and support for fellow NAIL TECHS with a passion for what they do, and show creativity to a client and to educate our clients to basic nail care and uplift our technicians. Nail Design 101 Magazine made its first debut in 2015 at “The For Sisters Only” Expo. Nail Design 101 Magazine will feature designs that will WOW you, from all over. It’s created by Nail Techs for Nail Techs. It’s to support each other and encourage each other in this industry of cosmetology as a Nail Tech.
I’m a NAIL TECH.
I create Nail Art. So, you might ask what is nail art. Isn’t it just polish and straight lines. Well, it can be, but it’s not. Nail Art is a talent that has unlimited boundaries. You really have to kind of zone out and create. Some Nail Tech do Nail Art a little different. I kind of become a “Nail Art Whisper…” I talk to my clients, I look at their hands, and inform them of what I’m doing a basic consultation. Then, I start their service and work up to the Art part. By that time, I have a Great feel of what they will like from the bedazzled to simple but clean appearance. The part that makes them different, the part that introduces them to something new, the part that shows them they can wear any color, but knowing how much to apply. So, in other words, they get their 101 attention. Nail Design 101 Magazine.
IT’S MY PASSION…
I’m a PUBLISHER.
Being a Nail Tech, we have our ups and down. We don’t have many outlets to display our talent. Hair has their shows, their magazines, and their products.
We have our Nail Show and we have our products. But we don’t have our publications. A magazine that will educate our clients to a basic level, but shows you where other nail techs are in different states.
This magazine is for Nail Techs by Nail Techs. The articles are of nail Tech and their journey as a Nail Tech.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Now, you ask has it been a smooth road. That’s a yes an no answer. The smooth part of the magazine is that it allows me to meet so many Nail Techs in the industry. Allowing me to show their talent to so many possible clients. Now, the bumpy part come about when I see talent, a certain restriction that keeps them from getting featured or noticed. When a potential client is looking for a Nail Tech in their area, they need to know a few things. Clients need to know the location being your city and state, they need a contact number so they can contact you to book their appointment, and they need to be able to see their work. So, they can’t be a private page. Another bump in the journey is Nail Techs seeing this as an investment, and investing in their talent past social media. People still read magazines and everybody doesn’t follow everybody, nor are they all on social media. So, struggles are different in every journey of something your passionate about so that is to just name a few.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is a two part. I am a Nail Tech. I’ve been a license for 18 years now. I provide services such as manicures, pedicures, Full-sets which is a extension of nail length added to the natural nail bed, Fill-ins which is reapplying of produce to the exposed area on the nail bed, repairs being anything from broken in half to just a chip on the corner of the nail, polish changes and so much more. Now, I specialize encased Nail Art. Encased Nail Art is the application of creating a vision of nail art design of miniature size items such as clock pieces or flowers of glitter or miniature beads. I am also a Publisher. In this part of my business, I specialize in scouting Nail Techs and their services. Creating an easier way for potential clients to render a nail service with a Nail Tech in their area. My proudest moment with both is when I introduce something new to an individual who didn’t know the advantage of having an educated and talented nail tech to create different Nail Art and being able to read a publication that introduces them to other outlets of talent from a Nail Tech within their area or not. What set me apart from many nail techs I strive to be different. What sets me apart from a Nail Design Magazine I introduce them to different. I am a team player I strive to work together because the supply and demand are different.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very creative, very hands on. I like working with my hands but was also very into colors. In high school, Art class was my favorite from the watercolor painting to just regular canvas painting. So, once I got into Nails as a client, I wanted to go further and become a nail tech to put those color to such smaller canvas being the nails.
