Meet Marty Hill of Sweet Science Boxing Club in Doraville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marty Hill.

Marty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2009, I left a career as an Executive Search Consultant to follow my passion for the sport of boxing. That same year I established the Sweet Science Fitness Brand and opened the first Sweet Science Boxing Club! Today we are one of Atlanta’s oldest Boxing Brands and Boxing Clubs!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a small business always has its up and downs. You must stay consistent and always in front of the curve. Boxing has always had a tough connotation tied to it so that is our toughest challenge. However, our goal is to show and teach individuals that the sport of boxing not only provides tremendous fitness benefits but what is taught in the boxing gym can also be utilized at home, the classroom and in the boardroom! The sport of boxing is 90% mental and 10% physical! That is why we call it the Sweet Science! We want individuals to understand you can gain the “Fitness of a Fighter, Without The Fight” meaning you can learn the sport of boxing in a clean, safe, nonintimidating environment without the fear of getting hit!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sweet Science Boxing Club story. Tell us more about the business.
Sweet Science Fitness is a training method developed to teach Atlanta’s Business Elite, Corporate Professionals, Men, Women and Children the sport of boxing within a clean, safe, nonintimidating environment located within our Sweet Science Boxing Clubs!

We teach the sport of boxing in one on one personal training sessions for individual that truly want to learn the sport of boxing. We have developed a curriculum that every 4 weeks our clients learn a new boxing skill set very similar to a martial arts black belt program. Clients must graduate from programs before moving onto the next steps within the curriculum. These programs are created to teach the basics of boxing up to sparring and even competition.

Our Group Cardio boxing classes are developed for individuals that are seeking to gain fitness, lose weight, and have exposure to a world class level workout in a group setting. Classes range from beginner tailored for individuals that have never boxed up to advance classes for individuals that have previous boxing experience. Sweet Science Fitness classes offer no contact so everyone is safe to attend.

Sweet Science Fitness is most proud of the multitude of individuals in the past 8 years we have taught the sport of boxing. Nothing more rewarding than seeing a person at a later stage in life that had no idea how a boxing workout could impact their lives. When they receive the boxing addiction it is like a renewed lease on life!

What sets us apart from others. To start we only offer BOXING! We do not offer kickboxing, MMA, jiu-jitsu, or other disciplines. We want individuals that are fans and are passionate about the sport of boxing! We also consider ourselves Atlanta’s Boxing Boutique. Many of our clients are Atlanta’s Business Elite, Corporate Professionals, Athletes, and Entertainers. We offer privacy and exclusivity which many boxing gyms are not able to offer. Our clients work one/one with trainers with no outside distractions!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Being a small business owner there is no such thing as luck. You either have Faith or you don’t survive. You must have faith and belief that if you are providing a quality product, exemplary service and take care of your clients the right things will fall into place. Now, that does not mean that there are times that being at the right place and the right time do help. Luck is something that can be created with hard work, determination, and consistency. When you have faith and believe you wake up knowing every day no matter what, things will turn out for the best!
