Today we’d like to introduce you to Javesi.
Hi Javesi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I was always daydreaming and till this day, I have a vivid imagination. I would engulf myself into music and envision a new reality around me. I could see what I’d be wearing, the hair and makeup, choreography, the whole nine. This alternate version of myself became the person I wanted to be when I grew up. As an adult now, I feel that seven years old me would be so proud of who we’re becoming, the risks we’ve taken, and how we’ve never let go of our dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being someone who is always searching for the deeper meaning of things or a signs of reassurance, I’d say my journey has been a defining one. My greatness lesson was learning that I never had to seek those things externally. My struggles with self-doubt, lack of confidence, and even imposter syndrome came to a head this past year. I realized just how fear-based my insecurities actually were. I noticed how I played small so people couldn’t have the chance see me and potentially be disappointed or unimpressed. Who was I to think I had something special to offer? That incessant voice questioning everything I thought I could be, doubting the light within me trying to break free is what ultimately set me free. I see now that to be audacious, to be brave, or courageous is to act in the presence of fear not the absence of it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a very creative person and I’m the happiest when I find new mediums to express that. Music has always been my first love. I remember writing my first song when I was 11 and it opened a new world of storytelling and fantasy for me. So becoming an artist has been a lifelong dream. I went to school for Audio Production with the sole purpose of learning how to make my own music, and to my surprise, I even graduated. Since I didn’t have my own recording rig until very recently, I started making my own beats and recording demos on my phone with GarageBand and eventually those became my first ep “The Memo”. It took me years to finally put my music out in the world, and it’s probably the scariest thing I’ve done so far as well as one of my proudest moments.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk taking is like adding seasoning to life, without it things would be rather bleak. It’s what sets apart those who are driven by a passion for experience from those who are limited by fear of the unknown. I am where I am today because of the risks I’ve took and always being willing to bet on myself. Sometimes it works out beautifully and sometimes it’s lesson learned, nonetheless there is always a story to tell. I took a risk when I decided to take myself seriously as an artist and invested all my time and resources into making that my reality. Being an independent artist is costly especially on a 9 to 5 salary, and I had to make countless sacrifices. There were moments I thought “what’s the point, no one is even going to care”, but I care. That’s all that really matters in retrospect. When I look in the mirror, I see a woman with integrity and a vision for her life and her art. I feel empowered by choosing to honor that vision instead of selling it short because I’m afraid of what could go wrong. Now here I am being interviewed by a magazine who noticed that and gave it a voice. This is a product of the risk I took, and I am beyond grateful.
