Rising Stars: Meet Shun “REAL” Gordon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shun “REAL” Gordon.

Hi Shun “REAL”, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an Atlanta-based artist, and I’ve been honing my writing skills for the past several years. Originally a poet, I decided to blend my talents with music and instrumentals. One of my friends from college (shout out to Virginia State University) was always playing beats, and without even noticing I started writing to the beat and the rest is history. I’m a rapper with heavy R&B influences and I strive to write music my audience can relate to. I’ve been working on music and my craft since 2010, but ultimately decided to share my music with the world April 2019, when I released my first Single “WhoDis?” on all streaming platforms. In August 2020, I created my record label, REAL Music, LLC, and began releasing music and REAL Merchandise under my new label. The label REAL Music, LLC is a play on my name “REAL”; which was the line name given to me when I became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc Spring 2009.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whew, it has not been a smooth road at all. I share a lot of my struggles in my music. My last album “Entries In My Diary” are literally entries out of my diary that I turned into songs. I’m extremely transparent with everything in my life. Along the way, I’ve gotten sick, I’ve been evicted and homeless, I’ve been jobless, and still continued along my journey with my head up high. I didn’t have money for studio time, and I started saving money to buy my own music equipment, so I can record whenever I wanted to. Another struggle I endured was creating a fanbase, it takes time and consistency to get people to believe in you and support you, and now I have the REALest supporters in the world behind me. Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
So for those who don’t know me, my name is REAL, what’s the deallll!? I’m known to wear a mean suit and give you dope music you can vibe to. My music has a different and unique sound; there’s not an artist I sound like. I’m also known as the actress who stars on one of the hottest web series in Atlanta called “Torn Between Lovers” where I play Leah, and I’m known as the Vice President of the Model and Talent Agency, Powerhouse Productions, LLC, I’m most proud of performing for the BET Hip-Hop Awards in 2019 and creating my business, REAL Music, LLC.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how Atlanta is filled with so many Black entrepreneurs, so many creatives, and so many people trying to create generational wealth. The thing I least like about our city is the traffic. Lol, I swear there’s always construction going on.
