Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Turner.
Hi Monique, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a proud native of Atlanta, GA, born and raised in Decatur, Ga. Growing up was not easy as we faced many struggles in life. Being the oldest of five children was not the easiest job as I mostly played the role of a second mom. Honestly, I felt deprived of a normal childhood due to being forced into adulthood at an early age. This caused a lot of pressure on me to be “perfect” and always have it together but even I failed at some point.
“Mistakes have the power to turn you into something better than you were before.” — Brian Tracy
In high school, I was always super goofy and fun to be around. My yearbook was always filled with heartfelt messages that always brought me joy. I was crowned homecoming queen my senior year since I was super popular on the auxiliary team. This is where I found my true passion for hair and makeup as the captain of our beauty department. As a student of Dekalb High School of Technology North, I obtained credits towards my cosmetology licence.
Once I left to attend Troy University college in Alabama, my love for hair and beauty grew tremendously. I started working backstage for our semi-annual fashion and talent shows. The abundance of support I received from my peers inspired me to pursue makeup full-time. As soon as I returned to Atlanta, I auditioned for MAC Cosmetics and free-lanced all around the city for 5+ years.
Although I enjoyed living out my childhood dream as a “MAC girl”, there were definitely some peaks and lows financially.
In which most artists fail to mention because they make it look so glamorous on social media. Being honest, I left the beauty industry and joined property management to gain more stability and income. This ultimately led to launching my own cosmetic line and now I work for myself full time.
“The biggest mistake we could ever make in our lives is to think we work for anybody but ourselves.”— Brian Tracy
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were definitely some pros and cons to launching my new business in early 2020 as we all faced the global pandemic,COVID-19. Thus, making a pop-up shop almost impossible to accomplish with large crowds. With the new required mask guidelines, it definitely became a struggle when conducting face-to-face transactions. Although dealing with the opposition was not easy, I continued to strive forward. Shockingly, there was a huge rise within the e-commerce industry as most customers prefered online shopping due to the COVID-19 restrictions. My annual sales for 2020 were surprisingly over $10,000 during the pandemic so I knew my brand would be successful.
We’ve been impressed with Pink Wave Collection, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a well-known make-up artist with 7+ years in the beauty sales industry as an Atlanta native. Early in my career, I worked on sets of VH1 for Love & Hip Hop Atlanta and R&B Diva’s. My work has also been shown during NYFW and Couture Fashion Week. After working 5+ years as a free-lancer for MAC cosmetics, I finally launched my own vegan cosmetic line in Jan 2020. Pink Wave Collection LLC is my new vegan cosmetic line that offers scented glitz gloss & waterproof matte liquid lipsticks. We have also added retractable lip liners to our collection with more featured products to come. My brand was created to support healthy beauty as we embrace the new wave of cruelty-free products.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I enjoy motivational reads such as “The 50th Law” to overcome issues of fear, uneasiness and anxiety. This book is suggested to be a bible for success in life and work based on a single principle: fear nothing. Other good reads that help manifest the life you want and deserve includes “The Secret”, which teaches you about the Law of attraction.
I always keep a gratitude journal to maintain daily notes of the things I am thankful and grateful for. Podcasts are definitely my go-to and I literally will listen to anything that has substance. If you want to hear my views on different topics, add me on Clubhouse.
As for apps, the only one that I swear by is called ” I AM”, which sends you daily affirmations to keep your spirits high.
