ATL INSPIRING JUNE 10

Buckhead

David Cone

I grew in Statesboro, Georgia, with a proclivity for playing football. Upon graduating high school, I was honored to attend the University of Michigan on a football scholarship to play quarterback. While there, I began learning about the technical aspects and theoretical history of filmmaking and video production. Once my tenure at Michigan was complete, I moved to Atlanta and found work immediately in the video space. Since then, I have started my own media production company, Cone Films, and I’ve produced and directed content for some of the most storied brands in the world. I am grateful for every opportunity and assignment I have been tasked with, and I like to think my journey is really just beginning. I now live in Roswell with my wife, Darbi Lou, and we are expecting our first baby boy later this summer. My business started in high school; at the time, I would sell bundles of hair here and there, not a lot of money but just something I was interested in doing. My name came from my middle name being Mirelle, and at first, The Mirelle collection was just a collection of hair types/bundles; before I expanded. During quarantine, I got the idea to do soft locs on my hair because they were trending at the time and they came out really good for it being my first time doing them. That day I got so many inquiries from people asking me to do their hair and that night, I made a price list. I never really thought that doing that would get me anywhere, but I began getting a lot of travel appointments to do clients’ hair in Atlanta. In June, I moved into a suite working with my friend and business was going good for me to have just been starting. With all the new clients, I decided to expand services that I could provide and I took a nail class in July. Read more>>

Well, I started out in Atlanta, G.A. I was doing Open Mic Talent Shows all over Atlanta, G.A. while still in High School. The years were 2002-2004. I was working on my stage show and how to properly entertain a crowd. In the winter of 2004, I sign up for an Audition. The artist that was chosen would receive a chance to open up for a Major Artist. So I performed and The Judges Enjoyed My Performance. They asked me my age. I told them I was still in High School, but I would be done with that in the summer. That summer, I went overseas and opened up for many Major Artist and That how I became an International Entertainer. I have been doing this every since. Read more>>

First, let me start by saying consistency and determination! I launched The Scalp Effect in January of 2020 with one goal in mind Generational Prosperity. I had just had my daughter and so many days I contemplated the hours spent working to build someone else’s empire while putting mine on hold. The year prior, I had gone through what felt like the worse year ever. What I didn’t realize until after was that it was the preparation I needed to be here, right here! I made it my duty to build my business up! I didn’t care what I didn’t have, I didn’t care who wasn’t supporting me, I completely and utterly began to promote my business with a passion! I became obsessed and it became something I couldn’t hide. While working for my former employer, as a Dental Assistant, I would use my spare time to work on my business. It got to a point where I had to choose. Read more>>

I recently moved to Georgia after feeling homeless for a little over a year and having to stay with family and friends. I was invited to Atlanta by a family member and because I felt that I needed some space where I was previously living with a friend, I took the opportunity and came to Atlanta, but it was supposed to be for a few weeks in January of this year. A situation came up and I needed a place to move to again, so I asked my cousin if I could stay with her and she told me no but recommended me to apartments in Atlanta where I could move without having to pay a deposit and that’s how I ended up in my apartment where I live, located in Fairburn, Georgia. So my story comes with many details that I don’t mind sharing. I currently work a full-time job from home and a part-time job that I just started a few days ago. Read more>>

When I was growing up in a small town call Staunton, VA. I went to schools where the majority were Caucasians. I would see them walking like Marcia on the Brady Bunch, hair moving, shaking, flowing through the wind. In my mind, I thought why my hair doesn’t do that. So I would get my Mommy’s hair nets, tie them to my hair and proceed to walk like my friends. Not knowing or understanding that nothing was wrong with my hair, just like nothing was wrong with their hair. IT WAS JUST DIFFERENT. Then one summer, my Daddy’s twin came in From Ohio and her hair was straight and bouncy. I proceeded to ask her what she had done to her hair. My Aunt Josephine told me I got a relaxer. I was so confused but not confused enough to stay out of the Beauty Supply Store. I went to Beauty Supply Store and got myself a jar of relaxer. I went home and relaxed my hair but she forgot to tell me about the burning part. My hair was straight and yes, I was Cute on the outside but on the inside, as a different story, the relaxer straightens my hair but not my heart. Read more>>

Reading was something I enjoyed as a young child. As I got older, I found myself being more drawn to urban fiction. The more I read, the more I thought to myself, “I can do this! I can be a writer, too!” So, I wrote my first urban fiction novel, printed it out, bound it, and gave it to my best friend to read. I told her to be brutally honest with me. Her feedback was awesome! She said she couldn’t put the book down. I passed my book along to a few other friends who had the same exact feedback. That’s when I knew I was on to something. I wrote my second urban fiction novel under the pseudonym Brooke B. and went through the process of self-publishing it. Just like the last time I had several of my friends read it and they could not stop raving about it. One friend thought it was so good she asked if we could start a book club! Another friend demanded a sequel! Wanting to challenge myself creatively, I made the transition from author to screenwriter and wrote nearly ten scripts through the years. Read more>>

Growing up as a kid, I used to love looking at my older cousin’s sneakers and thinking one day I would have those sneakers or better-looking sneakers. I thought because someone had nice sneakers, it made their outfit look cool and they were fresh, so of course, I wanted to be fresh too. I started collecting sneakers in middle school and from that day forward, I allowed my sneaker collection to grow. Which came the name ReddGotKicks2 because I wanted everyone to know I have cooler and more sneakers than my cousins LOL. In my spare time, I would research sneakers and watch sneaker blogs to keep me updated on the different types of sneakers and basic information on the different sneaker brands. As time went by and I realize I have a lot of sneakers, sneakers that is even over a decade old, but you would not be able to tell unless you read the box, I decided I wanted to take this sneaker thing to a new level, which is when I decided to attend sneaker events across the country and have an Instagram sneaker account. Babatunde Jegede

My name is Babatunde Jegede, I had my first hookah in college and I was really intrigued by it. So I went and bought my own and I began to take it to parties and everybody enjoyed it, so I continued to buy more and brought them to every college party. As I grew older, I ran into Key, who was just as intrigued in hookah as I was and she eventually convinced me to start my own business. A little after that, I lost my job of seven years, which is what pushed me even more and I ended up making my first business investment on a bulk order of hookahs. This was definitely a big sacrifice, especially after losing my job and my main source of income. I had to take a leap of faith and put my trust in God. I brought Key on as my COO because she was someone I could trust and she knew exactly what I wanted out of this company and where I wanted it to go. TruPulls was born on May 3, 2019, during a panarama. We were truly discouraged at first because we had so many plans that couldn’t go through. Read more>>

So first, I’m a family woman. Being a mom and wife is my favorite title! I’m a bereaved mom to a cancer warrior princess, as well as another beautiful little girl and baby boy. My oldest daughter passed away in April of 2019. It was a long journey for us and a seriously life changing event. As a result, we founded a non-profit called “Hooks ‘N Jabs” where we help families who are enduring Childhood Cancer obtain necessary resources. However, while in the process of healing, I’ve just been trying different things for myself and seeing what sticks or what I love. Just as I was blogging and writing, I started to try different wines. Now, I like to call myself a Certified Wine Appreciator. I’ve come to know and love so much about wine over time. This is because wine is something that I’ve always enjoyed with my friends and relatives. I’m always open to trying new things, and wine is such an adventurous subject. You can literally experience so many different parts of the world by drinking wine from particular regions. Read more>>

Honestly, before starting my business, A.D.S Media & Marketing, I struggled to find what it was that I wanted to do… what avenue I wanted to take with regard to my career. My education and work experience lied primarily in Criminal Justice/Criminology, so prior to starting this journey, I wanted to be a forensic psychologist, and then a crime scene photographer, and then a lawyer… so, as you can see, I was pretty much all over the place! However, I always enjoyed writing blogs… from entertainment to relationships to fashion, you name it. I enjoyed writing biographies for people and providing copywriting services for different brands – helping them translate their thoughts into words. Therefore, to me, this type of business just made sense. Read more>>

Movies and acting captivated me very early on in life. I didn’t always understand what it was that I was watching, but the craft of acting itself transfixed me. I was completely obsessed with the show Inside the Actors Studio with James Lipton. That was my idea of a good time as I listened to actors and actresses speak about their process and training. Throughout my youth, I took classes and acted in church plays. Funny enough, I didn’t do a lot of acting in High School, but I knew it was what I wanted to focus on in college. I graduated with a BFA in Acting, and for the next five years after graduating, I worked as an actress and teaching artist, consistently performing and creating. All was fine and dandy for a while. I was booking and performing more and more, but I started to notice within myself the inability to sustain my energy and a crippling anxiety that was making me miserable. This seemed to be directly related to performing and I noticed a marked difference in myself whenever I was in a production. Read more>>

This idea was conceived through a wandering yet imaginative mind. I must preface this story by including that my Mom, Sister, and I would often spend Sunday afternoons writing music with the catchiest melodies. We were truly a creative household, and I like to think that the seeds of my imagination were watered and harvested with love. A few years ago, my close friends and I (like the goofballs we were) would make silly songs about our day and things we saw while walking around. I would make the beat and come in with a few verses, another would lay on a few bars, and then seamlessly, we would wrap it all together with a catchy hook that pertained to the topic. It’s almost as if we were a walking Wild N’ Out episode, but we were pretty good, and funny too! Read more>>

I started traveling seven years ago and fell in love with island life. One of my favorite things to do to prepare for my trip was to find the perfect swimwear. As each trip came and went, I found it hard to find different pieces from what everyone was wearing and wanted to start my own line to give a fresh eye and different varieties of swimwear for the real everyday woman. So many times during the course of these previous seven years I would start, then life would happen, and I would stop. I finally committed to releasing on my 30th birthday (2018) and started to prepare. Then life… lol, I ended up becoming pregnant and decided once again to push things off. I’ve had strong leadership skills from an early age; when I was 16, I started my own dance team called “Ladies with Class” and another group called “Coragrave.” In addition to dance, we did many outreach activities like volunteering at home for the elderly. Who would have thought that a small leadership position would prepare me for my future career in Management? Not enough was done to ensure clients/patients knew their rights or to help them obtain the additional resources they needed. Read more>>

Let’s start by saying I am a jack of all trades. I don’t believe you have to specialize in one area and especially in this economy it is important to have many streams of income. I am a visual artist and educator living and working in Atlanta-Georgia since 2016. Originally from Quito-Ecuador, I came to Atlanta in pursuit of my Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Over the course of three years of my graduate program, with the mentoring of my amazing professors, I got to establish the basis of my artistic career by addressing some of the biggest uncertainties of becoming an artist. Why do I want to be an artist? What should I make? What do I want to say with my art? Why would people care about what I have to say? How do I get involved in the arts community? How do I get exposure? Am I gonna be able to make a living with my art? These and many more questions keep arising, and I realized that the answers could not be straightforward and maybe I should even be asking myself other kinds of questions. Pursuing any creative career comes with a big deal of uncertainties and freedom. Read more>>

I am a proud native of Atlanta, GA, born and raised since June 1990. Growing up was not easy for us as we faced many struggles in life. While this may come as shock to some, those that know me understand where I came from. Being the oldest of five children is not the easiest job as you mostly play the role of second mom. At times, I felt deprived of a normal childhood while being forced into adulthood at an early age. Landing my first job at the age of 14, working for Wendy’s. This caused a lot of pressure on me to be “perfect” and always have it together but even I failed at some point. “Mistakes have the power to turn you into something better than you were before.” — Brian Tracy. It all started with a vision. At the age of 13, I was in eighth grade when we were asked to write a poem for our graduation. I submitted my poem titled It’s Time To Spread Your Wings and Fly! To my surprise, my poem was chosen to be read for our eighth-grade graduation. It was then that I knew I had the ability to write. I knew then that I would be an author. Not knowing that God had given me a gift to be a Prophetic Scribe. Over the years, I began writing collectively. Until one day in 2017, I decided to publish my first book, Holiness for the Soul. Which is available on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble online. I then decided to launch Tyra Mitchell Books. In 2019 I discovered that I had the ability to make handmade jewelry. I’ve always been a very creative person. I have the mindset that if I see something, I can recreate it and make it my own.
