Conversations with Justin Hudson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Hudson.

Hi Justin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve loved retro games since I was a toddler, playing Sonic 1 with my dad and uncles. That early love for gaming stuck with me, and years later a friend on Xbox suggested I share my knowledge of video games — and beyond — with a wider audience. That’s how Retro Pioneers was born in late 2024. In a short amount of time, I’ve had the chance to host over 50 guests and connect with a growing community of people who share the same passion for retro gaming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it hasn’t been a smooth road. The hardest part has probably been the silence — not knowing if anyone’s actually watching or connecting with what I put out, especially in the early days when there’s no real feedback loop. You just have to keep going on faith that it matters.
The other struggle has been personal — as I’ve pushed myself to grow and go after something better in life, I’ve lost some friendships along the way. Not everyone around you grows in the same direction, and that’s been a harder pill to swallow than the content side of things. But it’s taught me that building something worthwhile sometimes means outgrowing people, even when that’s painful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I host Retro Pioneers, a podcast dedicated to celebrating nostalgia — digging into the games, shows, toys, and culture that shaped generations and exploring why those memories still hit so hard today. What I specialize in is drawing out the stories behind the nostalgia — not just what people remember, but why it mattered to them and how it shaped who they became.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space where people can reconnect with that feeling of nostalgia in a genuine way, rather than just skimming the surface of ‘remember this?’ content. What sets me apart is that I treat nostalgia as something worth taking seriously — it’s not just looking backward, it’s understanding how our past still shapes our present.

How do you define success?
To me, success isn’t measured by numbers or recognition — it’s about never giving up and facing every challenge head on. It’s about showing up consistently, even when you don’t know if anyone’s watching, and pushing through the setbacks instead of letting them stop you. If I can look back and say I kept going, kept creating, and never backed down from a challenge, that’s success in my book.
